puddles
A friend emailed the attached photo. They sort of remind me of a chestnut burr with something stuffed inside. Cute little fellers tho... []http://www.clubadventist.com/ubbtreads/attachments/186944-babyporcupines.jpg[/]
Administrators Gail Posted September 8, 2005 Administrators Share Posted September 8, 2005 Ah, are you sure those are porcupines, or are they hedgehogs? The reason I ask is because I used to raise hedgehogs. When they are little they are about the size of a Matchbox car and they are SO CUTE! Administrators Gail Posted September 9, 2005 Administrators Share Posted September 9, 2005 While they do play with each other while they are young and their spines are soft, and even for a little while after the spines harden up, as adults they can fight and best left alone. Or a mother will fight with a grown up offspring The exception to this is a male and a female together. The male is ALWAYS ready to mate and will harass a female until she gives in. Kinda like some human males... Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. Amelia
The spines of a just born porcupine are very soft, like hair. They harden up after a few hours. And just an FYI. When hooved animals are born, the nail is covered with a jelly like padding. No sharp edges! Administrators Gail Posted September 15, 2005 Administrators Share Posted September 15, 2005 The babies, like Amelia has said, have very soft spines so it is no trouble giving birth UNLESS you disturb the mother at all during this time. Then she EATS the babies <img src="/ubbtreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> It's the mating that boggles me... that's more delicate Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
