Derrell M
Soylent Green? I don't know what that is. The contents of this thread are making me sick. This is like a horror B movie. If true, the implications are... well... Ewww! I just thought of something else. When I was a kid my mouth got washed out with soap for using foul language. I hope it was nothing worse than pig fat.
Dottie
The fat is the part of the soap that makes it soft. The lye is what reacts with the fat. My grandmother used to make all her own soap. Of course, she didn't just use the lard from the pig. My dad says that when they had a slaughter, they used every part of the pig except the squeal. If we know what everything we use is made of, we'd either stop using a large number of things, or just get used to the idea. Does anyone wear leather shoes, belts, etc.? If it says "collagen", then guess what, collagen is in connective tissue. Then you have to ask yourself, connective tissue of WHAT? (or WHO?) And no, members of the plant and mineral kingdoms do not contain collagen. Same with keratin. It has to come from the skin/hair/claws/hooves of some kind of critter. It doesn't grow on trees. A lot of beauty products are marketed by using long pseudo-scientific words that make them sound like they were cooked up by NASA. The idea is that they think most women are stupid enough to think the product was "scientifically" produced and tested just for them. In reality, a lot of these long names are just the substances and chemicals found in the raw ingredients of whatever the product is made of (whether animal, vegetable or mineral). When I studied biochemistry and molecular biology at med school, I was astounded at how many chemical and body-part names sounded exactly like stuff I had read on bottles of beautifying muck. <img src="/ubbtreads/images/graemlins/icon_smile_sick.gif" alt="" /> Fortunately, it is getting easier to find plain and simple 100% vegetable oil soap. Michelle
Well, true, you can't get much more natural than that . . . except, aside from the thoughts of ingesting horse urine, the horses are quite mistreated. Really deplorable, along the lines of calves "raised" for veal, chickens "raised" to lay eggs, or pigs "raised" to become pork. (or dogs in "puppy mills.") Ethically, I have problems with it, as well as just the "yuck" factor. For the same reason, I wouldn't buy a dog from a pet shop, because it perpetuates the horrible "existance" of dogs in puppy mills. M
Amelia
Correct me if Im wrong. But isnt the "botox" that some women use to get rid of wrinkles, really a form of botulism? gina i
Why are some of you people so judgemental about women who use beauty products? The same could be said of a lot of things. Like wearing pins to dress up your wardrobe, etc. Wearing nice shoes. It's the same principle. It's so easy for other people to say "Just use the face God gave you!" I see nothing wrong if a woman wants to wear make up. Just don't over do it:) Quote All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen. -Ralph Waldo Emerson
aldona
It's not the women who use beauty products who incur my judgment...they are just doing what they feel they have to in order to feel presentable... it's the beauty industry, and society in general, that has indoctrinated women into thinking that our natural faces are not acceptable to present to others unless they have been adjusted and tampered with. Did you ever see that episode of Oprah where she asked her female audience members just to leave off their eye makeup for a day (not even their entire makeup!) and got gasps of horror? We will not have true equality between men and women for as long as this is the case. The Adventist teaching of simplicity in appearance could have been used as such a powerful message of personal freedom, self-acceptance and the supremacy of inner worth over external appearance. The legalistic way it has been taught in the past (you are still judged by your appearance and have to look beautiful in order to be accepted, but you must do it without makeup and jewelry) has done nothing but turn intelligent women off our message, and caused many to go in the other direction and feel like they need to use makeup in order to prove that they are free to express themselves. aldona Quote www.asrc.org.au (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Melbourne)Helping over 2000 refugees & asylum seekers each monthIMSLP/Petrucci Music LibraryThe Public Domain Music Score Library - Free Sheet Music DownloadsLooking for classical sheet music? Amelia
I bet there are PLENTY of SDA men who would rather look upon a painted face than a bare one. Shall we take a poll? Nope, you're not the only one -- although I do confess to putting collagen cream on my face after my shower, because my skin is dry and it will be itchy, flaky, and tight if I don't -- and if I use regular hand lotion it will break out. Ron Lambert
Friend, Soylent Green was the name of a classic science fiction movie, in which it was discovered that the liquid food that kept overpopulated earth going, was made out of the bodies of humans who died. At the end, the hero shouts out his discovery, that Soylent Green is made from people. And nobody cared. Amelia, "botox" is botulism toxin. Administered topically, it is supposed to have some cosmetic benefits, including reducing sweating--hence the flap over the claims that candidate John Kerry had had botox treatments so he wouldn't sweat on the campaign trail under the hot TV lights. Botox does have some legitimate medicinal uses. My sister has spasmodic dysphonia, a condition that developed during her early 30's, which makes her voice sound choked all the time (some sufferers from the condition may develop the opposite, an extremely breathy voice). She gets botox injections into her vocal muscles every few months, and it makes them relax, so her voice returns much closer to normal. Derrell M
There has been some talk on this forum about how women have to wear makeup and men don't. I have been in the TV industry for most of my career, and I can tell you for a fact that ALL of the men regularly seen on Adventist TV wear makeup. On TV, you will NOT see their faces without makeup. There is a makeup artist, and a makeup room as an essential part of the TV production process. $87.00 is cheap. They get the best.
