Derrell M
Thank God! Football season is here at last... finally something in this crazy, mixed-up world that makes some sense. So how will my Niners fare this year? Will they remain poor and downtrodden, or will they rise up and kick booty?
cricket
Surely, you jest when you say, "something...that makes some sense." There is nothing more senseless than a bunch (and I do mean a bunch...hordes, even) of grown men trying to get a ball (of pigskin, no less!) from one side of the field to another. Truly a senseless sport! (Albeit a fun one.)
Derrell M
Football makes perfect sense. The season is the war, the games are the battles, the teams are the armies, there are strict rules that are followed, territory is conquered and reconquered, no one is killed, armies are eliminated one by one, and at the end of each war the victors get a Super Bowl ring. It is all so logical. In a world seemingly ruled by insanity and chaos, football is a haven of logic to which we can run. We can sit on the couch with bags of chips, bowls of salsa, and cans of coke while our teams goes forth to do battle on our behalf. We can scream coaching tips to them, praise them, yell at them, and at the end of the game we can either mourn THEIR loss, or celebrate OUR victory. After all, if they followed the directions we shouted at them from our couch (through mouths full of chips, and spraying coke) their victory was due largely to us. Also, when refering to them we say, "my team." They are proprietary. Now does it make perfect sense to you?
Neil D
Quote: Now does it make perfect sense to you? Psydo-war makes perfect sense, in that you can do all the battle without any guilt of killing anyone. Yeah, in an illogical world, it makes perfect sense... /TIC mode-off Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw

aldona
Well, our football season is over...the Grand Final was played yesterday (Aussie Rules, that is)... I don't know who won. I don't even know who played. I've never followed the football. I wouldn't be able to name most of the teams. What I do know is that now we can go for a Sabbath afternoon drive without getting stuck in a moving traffic jam of football enthusiasts. aldona Quote www.asrc.org.au (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Melbourne)Helping over 2000 refugees & asylum seekers each monthIMSLP/Petrucci Music LibraryThe Public Domain Music Score Library - Free Sheet Music DownloadsLooking for classical sheet music? Moderators Nan Posted September 25, 2005 Moderators Share Posted September 25, 2005 Well WE - as in Sydney - won yesterday - and as their colours are red and white that is not a bad cartoon. The other codes - Rugby union and league - have another week to run - at least the league does. I don't get too worried by the traffic where we live, but it will be good not to have to hear it all ad nauseum on the radio while I am driving. (And for the record, I am not a particular fan of the Sydney team )
aldona
I just couldn't resist putting this in...it's a letter to the editor of today's "Sydney Morning Herald"...
Quote:
After a drought lasting several years the AFL premiership has finally been taken out by a Melbourne team, South Melbourne. It became clear during the presentations that the team was still South Melbourne. The players and the coach saw themselves as South Melbourne players, based in Sydney. The coach only just remembered to acknowledge Sydney in his speech when he was presented as the coach of South Melbourne. After years of toil to earn a place in the hearts and minds of this city, it is clear they never really were Sydney's team and should go back to Melbourne. A new team should be created, with none of the unwanted baggage that came with the South Melbourne team. Derrell M
Is Australian football soccer?
Derrell M
I have ocassionally had a football conversation with someone from another part of the world and there is always some sort of confusion that goes with it. Me: I love football. Its my favourite sport. Them: Really. Are you a goalie? Me: There are no goalies in football... and if there were, they'd have to be forty feet tall to guard that goal. Them: Huh? No goalies? Indeed! Pardon me, but... what is forty feet in centimeters?

aldona
Australian Rules football is in a class of its own...it's not soccer, and it's not rugby. Players of the above two codes call it "aerial ballet" and claim that Aussie Rules players are sissies who just like poncing around in tight shorts. I must be some kind of un-Australian freak, but I have never been able to understand it or its appeal to the masses. But it's nice when a Sydney team (which is really a Melbourne team re-packaged) wins over a West Australian team. Especially a team which hasn't won the Grand Final for 72 years. aldona Quote www.asrc.org.au (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Melbourne)Helping over 2000 refugees & asylum seekers each monthIMSLP/Petrucci Music LibraryThe Public Domain Music Score Library - Free Sheet Music DownloadsLooking for classical sheet music?
