David, I don't know how much older you are than I, but I gotta say, I haven't missed it. I learned "typing" in grade 9, 1983-4, and really hated it. I could never get the hang of setting all the tabs and margins, and footnotes were a nightmare for me. When I got to college and learned to use a real wordprocessor, I was in 7th heaven. No more typing and retyping and literal cutting and pasting.

When we went to China in 1994, our English department generously (ahem) loaned us a small manual typewriter that had so many keys that stuck that we got used to automatically flinging our hand up if we typed certain letters, because otherwise they'd all pile up on top of each other. Oh, how I detested that piece of junk! I dreaded making tests and quizzes. When my folks came to visit, they brought us a laptop, and that made life so much easier.

Remember typewriter rooms in libraries?

.....and the "joy" of cutting stencils to use on the old hand-turned duplicator! Mistakes in typing were not "whited out", but covered with that goey red stuff (my stencils looked as though they had measles!) Now, with laptop plus "spell-check", sadly there are no excuses for those mistakes! But, no, I would not wish for the old days to be back.

God bless,

OOOooo I remember the sickly sweet smell of mimeograph fluid. And the sometimes still damp test sheets.

I didn't know there were so many retired people in this forum.

Thats why I have so many arguments.

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

I worked as a secretary and dispatcher for a typewriter sales and service business in Southern California in the mid 1980's. What a blast!! I even got an autographed picture of Tom Selleck out of the experience.

The technicians taught me a little about the mechanics of a typewriter and instructed me on how to troubleshoot for them.

One secretary called to complain that her typewriter wouldn't print so I wrote up the service call. I was waiting for the technician to call for his messages when she called back. Someone had borrowed the font ball from her typewriter and hadn't returned it yet! I could feel her embarrassment through the phone! And then we both laughed about it.

One of my challenges at work was talking to a celebrity about their typewriter and not say anything about being a fan!

By the way, how often do you clean your typewriter or computer keyboard?
