Paul Beach
In this third installment of Mrs. Margaret Gray's popular Hygiene Series, she explores the topic of nose blowing in public. Dear contemporaries, Mrs. Gray has observed that some people blow their nose loudly in public and has observed this even in restaurants, and rarely in church. She finds the practice of expelling mucous in public in such a noisy fashion to be repugnant and holds that it should be frowned upon by all. Do you agree? Moderators LynnDel Posted October 5, 2005 Moderators Share Posted October 5, 2005 I witnessed the alternative to nose blowing this week in my classroom. I submit that nose blowing is a preferable alternative. LD Quote LD
Moderators Bravus Posted October 5, 2005 Moderators Share Posted October 5, 2005 I said it's never appropriate except when alone, but as a fellow-teacher I'm with LynnDel - the alternative can be worse. Actually, the other example that came to mind is on a plane. You're strapped in, and in public. But please, please, if you're sitting next to me, blow, don't sniff wetly every 20 seconds for the entire 10 hour flight. I may be forced to strangle you. cricket
Mrs. Gray might like to know that blowing one's nose in public is illegal in Creve Coeur.

Moderators Bravus Posted October 5, 2005 Moderators Share Posted October 5, 2005 It's also possible to blow a little more discreetly in public... Definitely some early morning renditions of 'Trumpet Voluntary' in the bathroom at home, but it's possible, if less efficient, to be subtle if one is stuck in a concert in the middle of the row during a performance or whatever. Amelia
Lets stick with blowing discreetly. Those who must dig in all the way up to the elbow to get that last little bit should be carted away. Amelia
Plus I would rather have a person blow than let it run and drip all over the place. Barbara
I try not to blow my nose in Church, but if is running I will do it as quitely as I can. With my kids I have the blow there noses anywhere, I would rather them blow it the let all that snot run down their faces. There is nothing yuckier them having a kid blow snot bubbles every time they take a breath. Quote .....Love others as well as you love yourself. Neil D
I wonder..... Is blowing your nose loudly in Church a way of publically signalling your disapproval of the sermon??? On a different note, the teachers of this forum have voice thier disapproval the the alternative to blowing your nose noisely....While my poor feeble brain admittedly admits to finding a *couple* of alternatives to blowing one's nose noisely in a public place, and since the scene of dripping poignace has been seared into everyone's mind, I would like to point out another alternative that came to my mind...that of blowing without explelling from the nose...a painful reminder that the estation tube, under the proper circumstances can communicate with the ear drum and cause a painful rupture to the same. ....Oh, excuse me, that is a quiet sneeze.... Never mind folks..... Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw

Dottie
This whole nose blowing thig is making me feel nauseous!!! The more I think about it, the more I think one is aware of one's nose running, and should take something something to dry it up! Sure, I understand that there are those who can't take medications, but wow... I'm a little prejudiced, because I have a spouse who repeeatedly, and often, blows his nose at the dinner table, with no excuse whatever. Yes, he's been told that everyone else loses their appetite, but he says that the handkerchief catches all the germs. Phooey! No Way! Oh, yes, he doesn't even turn his head. Sorry, I just had to blow off a little steam.

Do you agree?

Agreed! OTOH, there are times when unexpected mucous must be dealt with. Perhaps one should take a tissue, carefully find the center and hold with two fingers and twist with the other hand. When you have a nice point, place into the nasal cavity and allow tissue to "unwind" a little. You can then deal with the mucous and not make a noise. Some uninformed persons may think a tissue hanging from the mose is somewhat unusual. And, ............ Needless to say, if you have issues with both nose passages you may receive some strange looks from people who just don't understand that you have taken their feelings into consideration. Perhaps while having the two white tissues hanging from your nose you should explain to them that you couldn't control the mucous flow and didn't wish to appear repugnant by blowing in their presence. Naomi Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God
