I think that the answer, specifically, is quite simple....

The answer is "a lot".....

During Second World War I was surprised to hear British soldiers singing very secular texts to the same tunes we used in church on Sabbath. So I started investigating and discovered the secular texts were the original ones to the tunes.

In particular I was aghast at hearing them singing about the benefits of alcohol to the tune of What a Friend We Have in Jesus.
