Stan Posted November 7, 2005 Share Posted November 7, 2005 (This info provided by kinldy by Glenys Mino ) Athol's Story Athol V.Piper, MD, was born in Perth, Australia and died unexpectedly at home in Victoria, BC on October 27 2005. He was born into a missionary family and was a life long member of the Seventh day Adventist Church. His father, Pastor Albert H. Piper served as a missionary/administrator in the South Pacific Australasian Division and was the first Adventist missionary to work in the Solomon Islands. Athol graduated from Avondale College in 1940 and married Kathleen Clarice Kent on November 11th,1942. Athol served as a pastor in New South Wales and New Zealand for several years. Their first son, Haydn Kingsbury was born on August 25,1946. In 1949 Athol and his family came to North America to pursue an education in the medical field. He graduated from Walla Walla College and completed his medical degree at Loma Linda University in 1958. A second son, Lawrence Wayne was born July 13th,1952 and a daughter, Frances Kay was born March 7th,1958, both while Athol was in medical school. After interning at St Paul's Hospital in Vancouver,BC and practicing in Burnaby/New Westminister, BC the family relocated to Victoria BC and in 1960 Athol set up his own practice in the Shelbourne Shopping Plaza. He maintained the practice until 1984,then worked as a surgical assistant in local hospitals until the day before his death. Athol is lovingly remembered by his wife and companion of 63 years, his children and their spouses, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and extended family in Australia and the UK. He loved his family, home, church, neighbors and colleagues and he will be missed tremendously. Athol Piper came from Australia to North America in 1949 to pursue an education and graduatedfrom Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1958. He interned at St.Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, BC and practiced medicine in Burnaby before moving to Victoria and setting up his office in the Shelbourne Shopping Plaza. He will be fondly remembered by his loving wife Kathleen, his children Haydn (and wife Elizabeth), Lawrence (and wife Fay) and Frances (and husband Peter) and his grandchildren and great his great grandchildren and extended family in Australia and the UK. His works and memory live on. The family wishes to express sincere appreciationto the surgical staffs of the Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals who worked with Dr.Piper for many years. A memorial service was held Saturday,November 5th,2005 at 4:30pm in the Victoria SDA church 983 Pandora Ave, Victoria.In lieu of flowers donations to ADRA Canada in care of SDA church would be appreciated. Reportedly Canada's oldest practicing surgeon. This Man made my proud to be an Adventist.
