He who was dead is alive, but we who say we believe continue our quarreling, Flipping through Bibles to find passages To support our private theologies No wonder the children have left! We forgot to teach them the story. We taught moralisms instead of the Word of God. We've put Jesus back in the tomb, rolled the stone back in place, and Continued to behave as though he is dead. Have we mot heard? Have we not known? Yes. we have heard; yes, we have known, But our hearts are hardened. We hoard our stars and store up treasures here on earth. Anxious and stressed, vying for positions and power, WE spend our energies creating more rules, For fear of losing control, The rules have become more important Than the freeing word of God. We have processed the gospel into neat little packages and stacks of paper. We've gathered the saints into committees and asked them to serve without starlight. We've drained the poetry from the gospel We've taken the amazing our of grace And the glory out of God. Ann Weems, PUTTING THE AMAZSING BACK IN GRACE. Westminster John Knox Press, 1999, Pages 20-22.
