ISIS Militant Who Beheaded US Journalist May Have Been Released Guantanamo Detainee

On Tuesday evening in their latest “message to America” video, ISIS beheaded American journalist James Foley, as a revenge for airstrikes conducted in Iraq.

The unnamed militant, whose face was completely covered and spoke with a British accent, is raising questions about the background of the jihadist. As hundreds of Brits were believed to join ISIS after traveling to Syria to fight, the British government is examining the video to compare it with former Guantanamo Bay prisoners.

In an interview with the BBC, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond acknowledged that the apparent executioner spoke with a British accent and said the video seemed to be genuine.

Hundreds of Britons are believed to have traveled to Syria to fight in the country’s civil war, including many who have joined the Islamic State.

“We’re absolutely aware that there are significant numbers of British nationals involved in terrible crimes, probably in the commission of atrocities,” Hammond said. “Many of these people may seek at some point to return to the U.K., and they would then pose a direct threat to our domestic security.”

A European intelligence official said the British government was examining the video, and the speech of the purported executioner, to compare it with former Guantanamo Bay prisoners and other British residents believed to have joined the Islamic State.

Both prisoners in the video are wearing orange shirts and pants, similar to orange jumpsuits worn by detainees at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. A similar outfit, believed to be a jihadist symbol of the prison, was worn by Nicholas Berg, an American businessman kidnapped in Iraq in 2004 whose execution by an Islamic State precursor organization was recorded on video and posted online.

In the video posted on Tuesday, both of the journalists appear in orange shirts and pants, similar to the jumpsuits worn by Guantanamo Bay detainees at the U.S. military prison. After international pressure, the administration began releasing British subjects from Gitmo. Although the detainees pledged to not return to the fight, it would come as no surprise if the jihadist turns out to be a former Guantanamo detainee.

Now that we are desperately looking for ways to stop ISIS from their continuing advance, perhaps Obama setting free the merciless warlord, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi – who is now leading the ISIS army — wasn’t such a brilliant idea. Just let it come out that the militant who sawed off the head of our American journalist was a detainee released by Obama; I guarantee that the rage and anger that will ensue against our “stellar” leader will be inconceivable.
