Administrators Naomi Posted December 30, 2005 Administrators Share Posted December 30, 2005 Just wondering.......... When does the New Year start? Should we celebrate it at midnight on 31 December? Or, is it over at sundown, so we can retire at our regular time? Or, is it even important if, how and when we celebrate the calendar year's end and beginning? Naomi Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 30, 2005 Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2005 And then there are other societies where the New Year begin at another time. The bottom line is that the time to begin the New Year is determined by convention. Quote Gregory

cricket
Well, then, if we are to celebrate it at all, shouldn't we pack our bags and head to New Zealand?
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 30, 2005 Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2005 The New Years Day begins, as do all other days, at the Prime Meridian, not New Zealand. Yes, I am aware that in a small section of the world, the date does not change at the Prime Meridian. But, if my memory is correct, that fact results in a 24-hour delay, and does not make it earlier. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 30, 2005 Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2005 You could meet anywhere along the Prime Meridian. If you have brought swimming suits, and SCUBA gear, there are certainly plenty of places in the ocean. However, if you wanted to meet at the place with the greatest history, and where you would not get your feet wet, you would meet at the original site of the Royal Observatory at Geeenwich, England. That is where it all began. Quote Gregory
Administrators Naomi Posted December 30, 2005 Author Administrators Share Posted December 30, 2005 It appears this calls for "an executive decision" Ok ... (Our standard time is GMT+10 hours, 11 with daylight saving - we are not quite as far ahead as those islands east of NZ.) Maybe we need some definitions - is the Prime Meridian 180 degrees of the circumference of the earth going through both poles and Greenwich, or does it include the opposite side of the same imaginery line (that is, the meridian between 179 degrees west and 179 degrees east of Greenwich).?
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 30, 2005 Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2005 The Prime Maridian goes from pole to pole only one way. That is to say that it exists on only one side of the earth, and not on the other. Quote Gregory
Administrators Naomi Posted December 30, 2005 Author Administrators Share Posted December 30, 2005 Hi Gregory, Let's see if I understand; Greenwich is 0 longitude and 0 latitude. Does that make it the center of time and space on the third rock? I suppose it has worked for 150 -200 years so it must be ok. LOL Sometimes you just have to draw the line. Amelia
I've been to Greenwich (pronounced Grenitch) and it didn't feel like the center of anything.LOL In fact, somewhere I have a pic of me standing astride the meridian. Administrators Naomi Posted December 31, 2005 Author Administrators Share Posted December 31, 2005 Hey Doug, lol You are correct, I used the wrong word in my question. And, I agree, it depends on your circumstances. Personally I prefer just going to bed when I am sleepy and praying for the safety of those people who are celebrating and driving. I don't know if our little get-to-gether will be over early in the evening (suspect it will) or last until midnight. I would just as soon play a few games, laugh a lot and come home. Perhaps I am getting old Naomi Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God

Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 31, 2005 Moderators Share Posted December 31, 2005 Well, we all learn something. I thought that the International Date Line, and the Prime Meridian were the same. They are not. The International Date line can be popularly described as 180 degreees away from the Prime Meridian! So, all of my comments about the Prime Meridian are wrong. NOTE: For political reasons the International Date line does not run down a straight 180 degree longititude. That is the reason that on a group of islands in the Pacific, Seventh-day Adventists worship with Protetestants, and Roman Catholics, on a day that is named Sunday. Further, a number of times changes have been made in the International Date line. One such change was made in 1995. Yes, I can be wrong, and I have learned something out of this discussion. To settle the question, or to provide one answer, as to where the day begins: Antarctica is the "land" place where the New Year begins according to some experts. NOTE: At this point I am not an expert on this subject, do not claim the above is accurate, and will not argue with anyone who challenges the above statement. Quote Gregory
Dr. Shane
I remember the international date line is in the Pacific because in history class we were taught Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 but it was December 8 in Japan.
