Stan
OTTAWA — Statistics Canada says the country’s homicide rate fell last year to 1.44 victims for every 100,000 people, its lowest level since 1966. The agency says the 2013 rate was eight per cent lower than in 2012. It says police reported 505 homicides in 2013, down 38 from the previous year. The report attributes the overall decrease in homicides to a drop of 40 deaths reported in Quebec after two years of higher-than-average numbers of homicides in the province. Quebec reported 68 homicides in 2013, representing a rate of 0.83 per 100,000 population, the lowest rate recorded in the province since reporting began in 1961. Moderators Gerr Posted June 18, 2015 Moderators Share Posted June 18, 2015 Any thoughts why your next door neighbor has a much higher rate? Stan
Moderators Bravus Posted June 18, 2015 Moderators Share Posted June 18, 2015 I think the actual rate in the US is falling too, over all, though with much bigger numbers, partly due to have 10x the population and partly (in my opinion) due to greater inequality. LifeHiscost
A hilarious Australian stand-up comic explains what U.S. gun laws look like to the rest of the world Gun rights activists often claim that Americans need guns for their own security. However, a new study by the Violence Policy Center, a gun control advocacy group, shows that, when guns kill people, they are overwhelmingly used for murder rather than self-defense. In 2008-2012, guns were used in 42,419 criminal homicides and only 1,108 justifiable homicides (defined as the killing of a felon during the commission of a felony by a private citizen), according to the report -- a ratio of 38 to 1.
