In the world, suffering comes to be seen as something to be avoided, but we find in the Bible that the Lord so often specializes in using affliction as a teacher (Isaiah 30:20, Psalm 119:71, 2 Corinthians 4:17, James 1:1-4). We learn from the Bible that the wilderness is depicted as a time of quietness and solitude, where faithful men found God. For example, Moses spent 40 days and nights in the wilderness, after a time of sheer bliss and comfort in the Pharaoh’s court. (Exodus 2:5-15) Before John the Baptist started his public ministry, he too spent an extended amount of time in the wilderness (Matthew 3:1-6, Mark 2:2-7, Luke 3: 2-4). And this was especially so of the Son of God, who the Bible says, was led into the wilderness by God (Matthew 4:1, Mark 1:12-13, Luke 4:1-2).
