Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted July 9, 2006 Members Posted July 9, 2006 Has anyone here ever done whitewater river rafting? My boss has decided it would be great fun for his employees and their families/friends to take a whitewater rafting trip in August down the Deschutes River here in Oregon. I'm in two minds about it. It SOUNDS like fun, but ::gulp:: it LOOKS dangerous! Amelia Posted July 9, 2006 Posted July 9, 2006 Pam, It can be very dangerous but tons of people do it without anything happening at all. Just be sure that whomever you use as a guide supplies life vests and helmets. And then wear them when on the water. Problems on the Deschutes are usually from "john q public" rafters and not the guided ones. Guides know that river intimately Quote
"Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you." Eph 4:29

Fairview Or

puddles Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Hi Pam! I live in what is called "white water country" here in WV. We get folks from all over the US and other parts of the world that come here to go down the Gauley and New Rivers. Tho I've never gone (it's too pricey for me) I have to agree with Amelia. Make sure you go with a reputable guide. Several friends of mine have gone and would totally agree with that advice. Keep us posted on this adventure. Sounds like a great time! Quote

cricket Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 One other word of caution: my mother-in-law picked up a rare, but dangerous virus on the Colorado River while white water rafting. She was paralyzed from the waist down and had to re-learn to walk, balance, stand. Now, she walks with a walker or rides in a wheel chair--and will do so for the rest of her life. That was the Colorado River--the one you're looking at might have nothing at all like that. Just something more to consider. Quote
