I've just run across a problem in another forum - one that is Christian-oriented, but specifically for people who are exwitches, ex-occultists, and the like, but is also an outreach to those who still follow the pagan/occultic/witchy spiritual path.

The problem (for me) is this: recently there have been several new members who grew up SDA, got into the occult, somehow got back into Christianity, but are now TOTALLY against the SDA church. It really bothers me how they are making fun of EGW and say that SDA's follow her words to the letter; how all SDA's are legalists and rule-followers. One person wants to have a Bible study to show why the 7th Day is not the Sabbath. And the forum staff are openly encouraging the antagonistic attitudes - that bothers me because NO ONE is allowed to say anything against Catholicism or other mainstream denominations like Baptists, Lutherans, etc.

It's sorta breaking my heart. I KNOW I'm not the most knowledgable, and I have very little to offer in the way of defense of church doctrines. OTOH, despite my doubts and misconceptions about many things spiritual and about Adventism, I DO feel like the Adventist church is where I belong - it's just that I cannot articulate why.

I wish I could be more of a light for the truth at that particular forum - but.....I'm barely even a flame, if that..

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

I suggest reading Walter Martin's Kingdom of the Cults. He discusses Adventism at length and while he never accepted Adventism, he defended it against its critics and even convinced some of Adventism's critics, like Josh McDowell, that Adventism was not a cult.

Adventism is sectarian; that we can't deny. But we are not a cult in the common usage of the term.

Pam, could you simply ask them why that is permitted and why the apparent double standard?

I already know why... it's what Shane referenced to - they consider Adventists to belong to a cult.

It is very hard to discuss anything with people who are antagonistic to me from the very get-go. I don't post much there anymore... It's too frustrating.

::thinks::

And I'm not so sure that it is the healthiest place in the world for me to be atm. I have some good friends there, but sometimes their pagan arguments seem awfully convincing..

Shouldn't the standard be that no one post antagonistic attitudes about any religion? Shouldn't people be respectful of all religions (Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Animism, Christianity, Hinduism)?

Pam, are the practising occultists more tolerant of SDAs than those Christians?

yes....it's an interesting phenomenon. You would think Christians would be more tolerant of differences between themselves than pagans, but that's not what I've observed. That's part of the problem of trying to convert pagans to Christianity - they see the quarreling and bickering, the backbiting and snobbery, the intolerance and bigotry, all within a framework of purporting to *love one another.*
