Members phkrause
Plane safety Boeing executives met with FAA officials on Thursday to present plans for improving plane safety following a mid-flight fuselage blowout in January. The sweeping changes are meant to reassure the public, airline customers and regulators that the troubled company's planes are safe. The plan includes several components to improve employee training, clarify instructions for assembly line employees and prevent suppliers from shipping defective components to Boeing, the agency said. The FAA had ordered outgoing Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun to develop the roadmap after two reviews in February found serious problems with the company's Max jets and other quality control issues at the planemaker. A federal investigation is underway after a Southwest Airlines flight plunged toward the ocean off the coast of Hawaii. The incident occurred on April 11 but only came to light publicly on Friday after Bloomberg reported Southwest sent a memo to pilots about the incident. Bloomberg reported the memo indicated a "newer" first officer was flying at the time and inadvertently pushed forward on the control column. The Boeing 737 Max 8 flew as low as 400 feet before rapidly climbing, flight tracking data shows. In a brief statement to CNN, Southwest acknowledged the incident but did not address the memo or why the incident took place. Members phkrause
Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun plans to apologize for Boeing's recent safety failures during Senate testimony today. It is just the latest congressional hearing this year about safety issues at Boeing but the first time Calhoun is testifying in his more than four years running the troubled company. The plane maker has been under intense scrutiny with numerous federal investigations and congressional hearings since a January 5 Alaska Air Boeing 737 Max flight had a door plug blow off, leaving a gaping hole in both the plane and Boeing's reputation. Boeing has been ordered by the FAA to improve its safety issues before it can resume normal production, causing problems for airlines and higher ticket prices for passengers. Members phkrause
The FAA is investigating a Southwest flight that flew just 525 feet above an Oklahoma town, triggering an altitude warning from air traffic control. Data shows that Southwest Flight 4069 was about 9 miles from the Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City when it descended to the low altitude just after midnight on Wednesday. "Southwest 4069 low altitude alert," a controller is heard saying in an air traffic control recording, "You good out there?" The pilots' response is not audible. The Boeing 737-800 climbed briefly and maneuvered for a successful landing. This marks the second recent incident involving a Southwest flight narrowly missing the ground after one of its planes plunged toward the ocean off the coast of a Hawaiian island last week. Members phkrause
Boeing has agreed to buy Spirit Aerosystems, one of its major suppliers and manufacturing partners, as part of the aircraft maker's plan to overhaul its badly damaged safety reputation. Spirit makes major parts of several Boeing models, including the fuselages for the 737 Max — which remains under scrutiny for numerous safety flaws that have come to light. Meanwhile, the Justice Department is nearing an agreement with Boeing that would include a corporate monitor and a fine in exchange for a guilty plea to criminal charges, according to lawyers representing the families of victims of two fatal 737 Max crashes, who rebuked the offer as a "sweetheart deal." Members phkrause
Where we're traveling Data: Mastercard. Chart: Axios Visuals ☀️ Cancun, Aruba and London are the hottest global destinations for American travelers this summer, Axios' Alex Fitzpatrick writes from new Mastercard data. 🇯🇵 Tokyo, where a relatively weak yen is driving a huge — and controversial — post-pandemic tourism explosion, also cracked the top 10. Albania is emerging as a top destination for global travelers, thanks to relatively low prices compared to classic European draws. Romania is also increasingly hot. How it works: Mastercard's findings are based on each city's share of total flight bookings from the U.S. between June and August. 🛫 By the numbers: Summer is always the busiest travel season, and this year's is breaking records. TSA set a new record last week for screenings in a single day. Six of the TSA's 10 busiest-ever days were last month. Two more of the top 10 were in May. See the TSA Top 10. Members phkrause
Flight cancellations Hundreds of flights in the US were canceled this week as carriers work to recover from a global tech outage that caused massive delays and left travelers stranded at airports around the nation. Delta Airlines canceled over 1,200 flights into, within or out of the US on Monday, and over 9,000 were delayed, according to flight tracking site FlightAware. Delta passengers have been slammed by more than 4,400 cancellations since Friday, including more than 950 as of Monday evening, by far the most of any airline. The "largest IT outage in history" — prompted by a software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike for Microsoft devices — impacted more than 8.5 million Windows devices worldwide, causing disorder at airports, outages for 911 services and challenges at health care facilities. Members phkrause
✈️ Southwest embraces seat assignments Photo: Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images Southwest Airlines is ditching its famous/infamous open-seating plan and will soon begin assigning seats and even offering some premium seating with extra legroom. The airline said its research found that 80% of customers and 86% of potential customers preferred assigned seating. It didn't announce a timeline for the change. 💺 Our thought bubble, from Axios aviation expert Alex Fitzpatrick: This is a monumental change for Southwest, which has long held on to its old-school ways even as other airlines raked in revenue from options like "economy plus" seating with extra legroom for slightly higher fares. Southwest is facing pressure from both sides: More premium airlines are making money off economy plus seating, while ultra-low-cost carriers are stealing away budget travelers with truly no-frills flying. The airline basically had two choices to stay competitive: operate more like a premium airline or more like an ultra-budget one. This move suggests it's taking option A. Go deeper. Members phkrause
💺 Southwest Airlines ditching open seating By Tasha Tsiaperas and Jacob Knutson Photo: Gary Hershorn/Getty Images Dallas-based Southwest Airlines is adopting assigned seating and will offer some premium seating with extra legroom in a fundamental change to how the company does business. Why it matters: Southwest has had an open seating policy for its 50-year history, with passengers boarding in a certain order and choosing any available seat on the plane. Premium seating has not been part of its revenue stream until now. Driving the news: Southwest will also start offering redeye flights in five initial nonstop markets: Las Vegas to Baltimore and Orlando; Los Angeles to Baltimore and Nashville; and Phoenix to Baltimore. The company reported yesterday $367 million in profits in the second quarter, about on par with projections. The big picture: The changes come after an activist investor called for an overhaul of the airline's board and operations. The airline also experienced a series of potentially dangerous incidents this year. Flashback: Southwest's boarding process started as a way to quickly load and unload passengers. It kept the airline efficient and allowed the carrier to run more flights, per AP. But, Southwest CEO Bob Jordan told CNBC open-seating was the primary reason passengers reported switching airlines. The airline said it found that 80% of its customers and 86% of potential customers prefer assigned seating. What they're saying: The Southwest CEO expects a small number of customers will say they want to stick with open seating. "But we had the same thing when we switched from plastic boarding passes. We had the same thing when we took peanuts out of the cabin. I'm convinced we can win them over," Jordan told CNBC. What's next: The redeye flights are on sale but won't take off until next Valentine's Day. And the boarding process likely won't go into effect until next year. Plus, Southwest will still offer free checked bags. Quote phkrause Obstinacy is a barrier to all improvement. - ChL
