Ok, the "oops" part of the sentence, I understand...conveys a mistake.....but the "my bad"? My bad what? attitude? character? "I am making an excuse for....?" ....

Ok, I admit that I am out of the loop of where this comes from...But I guess I just don't understand what they are excusing...bad what????

That is a very good question. I think the my bad part is away of say I am sorry or that was bad of me to do that.

Bad is colloquial here for mistake

"Oops, my mistake"

I bet Neil understands this sentence. "Hey baby, that's real groovy", and it has nothing to do with infants, reality, or grooves.

It seems that Neil is not the only one out of the loop. Must be that southern thing ... never heard it used in real-live conversatoin.

Hi Neil,

This is funny. At one time, before I was married, I did a lot of chatting and I had a good amount of female friends. I don't remember what we were talking about, but she said to me, "My bust" I got kind of silent, cause I had no idea what she was saying. So finally I asked her what she meant. She said that it meant that I had busted or caught her in a mistake of lie, (can't remember exactly now.)

But that sure took me by surpirse when I saw those words on my screen.

Interesting ... have heard people simply say, "Busted" but not "my bust."

We are learning a lot of communication skills ... perhaps ... maybe ... ??????

I just asked the girls in the office and they said it is a commonly used expression here, meaning - "it's my fault."

Hmmmmm...."Oops" conveys that a mistake has been made. "My bad" means "my mistake"....

Sounds like I, if I were to use this colloquial statement, am repeating myself....

I do enough of that already.... saywa

And yes, I do know what "Hey baby, that's real groovy" means... :J

Five years ago I was incredulous when I heard some kid say "my bad" on the basketball court.

In the typical uptight way of the English I exclaimed that it wan't even a sentence. Only last week I said to my secretary "my bad" when I forgot to tell her about something. I hated the phrase but now I kinda like it.

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.
