WWC student hurt in wreck dies

Jun 12 2002 12:00AM By Kathy Korengel of the Union-Bulletin

Nathan Quaile had been comatose since his vehicle went over a cliff June 1.

A Walla Walla College student who was injured when he drove his vehicle over a cliff in the Blue Mountain foothills on June 1 died early this morning, according to officials.

Nathan Quaile, 20, died at 2:55 a.m. at St. Mary Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said.

Walla Walla County Coroner Stephen Ames said Quaile died of closed head injuries he sustained in the car crash. Quaile had been comatose since the accident, Ames said this morning.

Ames said Quaile had lived in College Place and had been attending Walla Walla College. Ames said Quaile's parents live in Pendleton.

About 7:15 p.m. June 1, Quaile had been driving a 1984 Ford Bronco II down Tiger Canyon Road, returning from playing in the snow, according to initial Umatilla County Sheriff's Office reports.

He drove the vehicle off the edge of the road; it fell 94 feet over a cliff and landed upside down on the same road below, Sgt. Dave Williamson said shortly after the collision.

A helicopter transported Quaile from the scene to St. Mary Medical Center, he said. Two 14-year-old passengers sustained leg and hip injuries in the crash and were taken by ambulance to St. Mary Medical Center, Williamson said. Quaile and the passengers had been wearing seat belts, he said.

Williamson did not know the names or addresses of the passengers at the time and was unavailable this morning.
