One of the bright spots of the present administration has been its development of the First Freedom Project at the Justice Department, to enforce Federal laws protecting religious freedom. Under the leadership of Eric Treene, the Justice Department's First Freedom Project has stepped up its prosecution of religious accommodation employment discrimination cases; land use cases involving churches and other religious liberty cases. Now the First Freedom Project is conducting seminars across the country to better acquaint citizens with the Federal laws that protect religious freedom. Admission is free, but space is limited and registration is required. For more info, contact Valissa Johnson at 202-514-9470. This program should prove especially interesting for attorneys, pastors, religious liberty leaders, elders and anyone with an interest in how our constitution and federal civil rights laws protect religious freedom. Those working in community services and in inner cities will be especially interested in the segment addressing discrimination in public accommodations and facilities. Educators should pay special attention to segments addressing discrimination in public education. In short, this seminar will have wide relevance for a great number of individuals. Following the seminar, the North American Religious Liberty Association ["NARLA"] invites you to a luncheon. We are grateful to our friends at the law firm of Sidley & Austin, and especially Jeffrey A. Berman, Esq., for offering us the use of a conference room there. Seating will be quite limited, so you need to register in advance by calling Loritha McDuffie at 805-413-7396. There is no charge for the luncheon, but attendees will be urged to become members of the North American Religious Liberty Association, and to become more actively involved in religious liberty ministry. The keynote speaker for the luncheon will be Alan J. Reinach, Esq., Director of Public Affairs & Religious Liberty for the Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, and president of NARLA-West. His topic: "For Such a Time as This!" NARLA is a ministry of the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists. It is a membership organization and is urgently needed to project the Seventh-day Adventist prophetic message to civic and political leaders. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These religious liberty newsflashes and legislative e.lerts are published by the Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Department of Public Affairs & Religious Liberty in conjunction with the North American Religious Liberty Association - West.
