Akseli Gallen-Kallela (April 26, 1865 – March 7, 1931) was a Finnish painter who is best known for his illustrations of the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. In 1878 he travelled to Düsseldorf and enrolled at the Kunstakademie, where he attended classes on landscape painting by Eugen Dücker until 1886.
