Colin Powel endorsing Obama

Recommended Posts

For the record, while I disagree with Rush, I do not think him stating Powell's endorsement of Obama was race based was in itself racist. I also believe what Rush said about Micheal J. Fox was mischaracterized by media reports. I cannot think of anything specifically that Rush has said that has been racist. Of course I don't listen to him everyday and when I do I am just catching bits and pieces as I drive between projects.

I heard Rush...LOUDLY he proclaimed that the reason that Powell endorsed Obama, was because of racism. Powell did NOT endorse Obama because 'he's a brothera"...Powell endorsed him because, after a lengthy discussion/explaination, Powell said that Obama is qualified to be President of the US.

And Powell outranks McCain, and that carrys some weight...

And Rush, with his feminNazi and pinko communists calls with everyone who disagrees with him, needs to admit that he's racist as well...

The beliefs of Powell parallel the beliefs of McCain. There is a clear record of this. They are both moderate Republicans. You could list one belief after another and not come up with any beliefs that Powell shares with Obama. Why would Powell all of a sudden want an extreme liberal in the White House ... even if he was 'qualified' which he is not when compared to John McCain and Sarah Palin.

So ... the only thing that is left ... is RACE.

Believe or not, Redwood, we're actually in agreement on this point. There is no question that if Obama wasn't running, McCain would get Powell's vote. He's even said McCain is a good man and would be a good president. I thought the reasons that Powell gave were not very strong, such as McCain's bringing up Bill Ayers, which is actually a legitimate topic when you are considering the importance of the office and the need for Americans to consider those things in an election. I think the more Americans know about both candidates the better. I want them to know as much as possible about McCain, too.

This is highly unusual for Powell to switch parties, and I don't see how Obama's very liberal record alone could have caused such a change in Powell.

Would Powell have been voting for Liberal Joe Blow if he had Obama's record? Can't imagine it.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Way to attack the character of an honorable man simply because he went against what you believe how one should vote.... party affiliation.

Powel is NOT SWITCHING THE PARTIES. Powel is by no mean is democrat or liberal. Can you tell me the reasons he gave for voting for Oboma????? Have you even seen the interview????

I have never seen Powell play the race card. He is an honorable man. I think he gave many more reasons why he voted for Obama than most "endorsers" gave as to why they were voting for a particular candidate. I think that Powell thinks that Obama is the best choice, irregardless of his color. I think that the biggest thing that "killed" his vote for McCain was what he said about Palin...he really doesn't feel she is qualified to be president should something happen to McCain, even though he admires much about Palin. Now I know that many here would disagree..but if that is what he thinks, then I admire him for voting for his "conscience" no matter whether I agree with him or not.

I think Powell feels he was used by the Bush Administration to get us into Iraq and he harbors hard feelings because of that. I think his time in this past Administration has turned him sour on the current group of Republicans in power and that is why he has decided to support Obama. I do not believe it is because of race.

However that said, I don't think those that believe it is because of race, like Rush Limbaugh, are racist just because they say so.

You are 100% right Shane. Not only that, I think that he believes that his party has lost its way. Yet, I don't think that his basic belief system somehow was altered. He questioned McCain's judgment because of Palin, and he is absolutely right. She may be a great mother, and can relate to people... yet I don't think she has understanding it takes to be a leader of a country. There are many people who would be a better choice.

Some of the main reasons he gave:

1) Whoever will be the president will inherit economic crises. McCain admitted that he does not understand economic issues at hand. He changed his beliefs on economy through the course of the campaign several times. First he was deregulation, then he was for heavy intervention just in times of crisis, and now he is for regulation. He goes with the flow instead of sitting down and understanding issues at hand. He criticized Obama for being a socialist, yet he was one of the avid supporters of the Bailout, which is essentially socialism and boarder line communism.

2) McCain does not surround himself with right people, and his choice of Palin is a great example of it. In fact this choice will be the one which will loose him this election IMO.

These are two main reasons that he gave, and these are valid reasons IMO, although I still think that Obama is not an answer.

But, for all the "Because he's black" sayers, consider this. Whould any reasonable man risk his further political ties and friendships simply because he would like to see black president? A question to John and Redwood: do you really believe that Powel is such a shallow man?

Very well said.
