Dr. Shane
Priest: No communion for Obama supporters A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil." ..."Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exits constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation." ..."It was not an attempt to make a partisan point," Newman said in a telephone interview Thursday. "In fact, in this election, for the sake of argument, if the Republican candidate had been pro-abortion, and the Democratic candidate had been pro-life, everything that I wrote would have been exactly the same." Dr. Shane
I would say it comes awfully close to losing its tax-exempt status for comments like that. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted November 16, 2008 Moderators Share Posted November 16, 2008 Just today the Catholic hierarchy has revoked that priest's ruling. Dr. Shane
I would think that would have had to if they wanted to avoid problems with the IRS. We have the right to freedom of speech and freedom of worship here but we don't have a right to tax exemption. If a church wants to be tax exempt there are certain rules they have to follow. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted November 29, 2008 Moderators Share Posted November 29, 2008 Shane: If the priest had told the people not to vote for Obama before the election the priest might have violated IRS rules. However, the priest did not do that. On November 9, several days after the election, he distributed a letter that told the peole that if they had voted for Obama in the preceeding election, they should not eat the elements of the Mass. That is permissable according to IRS rules. He was not even close to violating them. Under the First Amendment churches are allowed to do exactly that.
