Thanks for finding those videos Amelia, I did not have time this morning. Things are relatively stable at the

moment - the number of houses lost has been upgraded to 1800 and someone has been charged with lighting

one of the fires. But there is more bad news still to be uncovered we believe.

What a neat story about the koalas. It's cool the way animals can discern a friend, or at least they appreciate the kindness of a human. It's something you'd expect to see in a children's movie.

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

I agree - what a cool story about the koalas.

re: the arsonist who got caught - I hope he/she gets slapped with complete responsibility for what was done and the aftermath. After all, it is not only arson, it's murder.

It has been noted that the koala story did not actually come from the fires last weekend, but

from some burning off (in an attempt to reduce hazard risk) the week before, by the fire authorities.

But it is still a good story.

That was the allegation made by certain sectors of the media - which has been thoroughly refuted. (the Herald-Sun ran a whole series of follow-up articles on "Sam the Koala: Why the sceptics are wrong."). The person making the claim that Sam was not really a bushfire victim has been roundly denounced by the press and the public as a cynic and an attention-seeking opportunist. (can anybody say "Derryn Hinch"?)

Claims koala Sam was not in bushfire affected area refuted

According to the latest reports, a 39-year-old man has been arrested in Morwell and charged with a number of offences including arson resulting in death and possessing child pornography. He has been moved to a prison in Melbourne due to concerns about his personal safety.

(Sounds like a candidate for Victorian Citizen of the Year?)

The offence of "arson resulting in death" or "murder by arson" carries a much heavier penalty than just plain arson that burns down a building. No doubt this guy will be spending a very long time behind bars.

I don't know Australian law, but here in the U.S. and especially in Tennessee where I live, a person deliberately starting a fire that injures a person in any way, even himself/herself, gets a minimum (I think) of about 40 years in prison. This is more than double the usual prison sentence.

Why do people commit arson?

1. Publicity

2. Mad at his girlfriend (firefighter did that by shooting rockets under her trailer).

3. Mad at society as a whole (lost job, told couldn't hunt in woodlands by owner). One person set five forest fires in one day with firefighters battling the most recent one he set.

4. Wanted insurance money (brand-new trailer went up in smoke because lady didn't like it. Insurance company paid it off rather than fight it)

5. Carelessness (started fire to burn something with leaves all around or playing with matches).

A firebug who started a fire in my community in 1990 (in which 66 homes were lost or damaged) was later arrested and is now in prison on a long sentence. At trial it was revealed that he is a person who gets sexual stimulation from watching a fire burn out of control.

(He was a professional firefighter himself when he did this.)

Unreal James, unreal. Come Lord Jesus come. This world can't go on any longer like this.

By the decree enforcing the institution of the papacy in violation of the law of God, our nation will disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan and that the end is near. {5T 451.1}

As of Monday morning (16 February), our time:

Eight fires are still burning out of control in Victoria but no towns are under direct threat.

Eight Victorian bushfires burn out of control

The death toll has been frozen at 181 for the past few days, but this is because the police have stopped publicly updating the numbers at this stage - they are having trouble finding and identifying victims in the ashes, such was the total destruction.

Fire's intensity leaves no trace of victims

This is a recent update I found on the Record website about the SDA church's response, and SDA members and infrastructure affected.

Adventist church in Victoria prays for fire victims

And this is a little closer to home...A fire broke out in Belgrave, near walking tracks in the national park, yesterday afternoon. We were eating out with friends at a restaurant in Upwey, just a few miles away, and we could see the smoke and the water-carrying helicopters overhead. Fortunately they controlled the fire after about 2-3 hours.

Fresh burn in Belgrave underscores ongoing fire risk

We took up a special offering on Sabbath for the fire victims. I have not heard yet how much we collected, but the church was packed to full capacity. None of our members have lost lives or property, but we have a couple of people who live in Drouin and were under potential threat from the Bunyip/Gembrook fire for a while.
