Members rudywoofs (Pam)
Yes, indeedy. I'm a Mormon in good standing. But I'm also an Adventist. Moderators John317 Posted October 11, 2010 Moderators Share Posted October 11, 2010 Do you believe the Mormon doctrines, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine of the Covenants, etc.? Members rudywoofs (Pam)
I'm not versed in most of the Mormon doctrines. Not quite sure I believe Joseph Smith needed a special pair of glasses to decipher what he claimed he found. And my "prophet-sharing" is all filled up, what with EGW and all. Actually, I just found out that my whole family has recently been baptized by proxy into the Mormon church, including me, my parents, my brother and his family, my cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, gr grandparents, etc. Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. Moderators John317 Posted October 11, 2010 Moderators Share Posted October 11, 2010 That's true-- the Mormons have someone baptized for almost every dead person. It doesn't really make the dead a Mormon, but they believe it does give them a chance to be saved. So it's a nice thought, anyway. I guess you could say at least they're motivated by a desire to help souls on the way to heaven. That's a lot better than standing by the grave with a sign saying, "God hates soldiers," or "God hates homosexuals." Liz
Actually, I just found out that my whole family has recently been baptized by proxy into the Mormon church, including me, my parents, my brother and his family, my cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, gr grandparents, etc. So do you know the person that did that for you? I mean was it a family member that is Mormon, or a family friend? How did you find out? Sorry, for all the questions, but that must have been a shock and an interesting conversation to say the least. Members rudywoofs (Pam)
My mom was doing genealogical research and found the information. A relative, who is Mormon, did the baptizing for all of us in the SLC temple. Apparently, a Mormon member can be baptized for all ancestors, as well as for living family members. I don't think they can baptize for people outside of their family, i.e., for friends. A family friend's family was broken apart when the son joined the Mormon church. His brother is a Lutheran minister. The mother got very upset, and stated, "Once a Lutheran, ALWAYS a Lutheran!" Twilight
This is where we have been going wrong with the 3 angels message perhaps? We should just baptise the whole world in their absence, it would make universalism part of our teachings, but these days anything seems to go... The best wisdom is always second hand... Moderators John317 Posted October 11, 2010 Moderators Share Posted October 11, 2010 Mormons don't make dead people members. Those people who are baptized by proxy aren't included among the membership of the church. From the Mormon viewpoint, they are simply being given a chance to have salvation. They baptize for all the dead, not merely for relatives of Mormons. That's why Mormons are really good at geneology, because the Latter-day Saints keep records of the dead and they have all those dead people "baptized." The Jehovah's Witnesses don't do anything like that. They believe like we do in terms of the state of the dead. On the other hand, the Mormons believe that all of us were once in heaven and that after death, we continue to be conscious and to be even more knowledgeable than people are when alive on earth. No, she wouldn't have had you added in as a Mormon. Have you read the "Mormon Bible" she gave you? Are you referring to the Book of Mormon? Moderators John317 Posted October 12, 2010 Moderators Share Posted October 12, 2010 It's an interesting book. I've read it at least 3 times and will no doubt read it again. I enjoy talking to Mormons. The other day 2 Mormon missionaries came to our day, and I had them in and talked for a while as they drank some cold water. They had learned Spanish and so could talk to my wife. I told them any time they are on my street or nearby and are thirsty to come by for water or a rest. I used to do similar work as they are doing, so I know what it's like to walk the streets in the heat. If they come over again, we'll enjoy talking together about Mormon beliefs. I basically just ask questions and listen closely to their answers. Members rudywoofs (Pam)
I'm not sure what kind of fabric, but I *think* it was cotton or linen. It didn't appear to be too uncomfortable. But it's worn *underneath* the normal underwear. There were various symbols embroidered on it. Can't remember exactly what they were, though.. Moderators John317 Posted October 12, 2010 Moderators Share Posted October 12, 2010 I'm just thrilled to death that my church doesn't require me to wear anything like that under my regular underclothes. A funny thought is what happens when Mormons are studying with someone who wants to be a Mormon, and then the time comes when they have to say something like, "Oh...uh... by the way, Ed, there's one little thing-- but not too small-- that we have tell you... Uh... well, if you really are serious about joining us, you will need to.... well, Jack here will show you what you'll need to do. It's really not an option, I'm afraid. You'll get use to it... We all do eventually. Jack, would you please drop your drawers and show Ed?" I can imagine the shock and dismay on Ed's face. Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted October 12, 2010 Administrators Share Posted October 12, 2010 Nowhere near the reaction to being told that you have to be circumcised... YOU ARE GOING TO CUT OFF, WHAT!?!?! I am just glad that our induction ritual is just getting quickly dunked under water... "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. Woody
Some may not realize it ... but our church has it's requirements for under clothing. Our prophet has outlined this in the quote below where she dictates that our under wear (and ALL clothing) should hang from the shoulders. Quote: "This brings us to another error in the dress of women at the present day: The under clothing is usually sustained by the hips alone. This heavy weight, pressing upon the bowels, drags them downward, and causes weakness of the stomach and a sense of lassitude which leads the sufferer to incline forward; this tends to farther cramp the lungs and prevent their proper action. The blood becomes impure, the pores of the skin fail in their office, sallowness and disease set in, beauty and health are gone. Ladies may resort to cosmetics to restore the tint of the complexion, but they cannot thus bring back the glow of healthful feelings to the heart. That which darkens and dinges the skin also clouds the spirits and destroys the cheerfulness and peace of the mind. Every woman who values health should avoid hanging any weight upon the hips. The shoulders should be made to sustain the weight of every article of clothing worn upon the person. This will relieve the bowels from undue pressure, and prevent that weakness of the stomach and bowels which is prevailing to an alarming extent." ....... Ellen G. White in HR Feb 1 1877 May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

People have exposed a lot about freemasonry and its secrets, too. My grandfather was a 33nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. When he died, my grandmother was supposed to bury him with his sheepskin, but couldn't find it. And when my mom decided to move away from home out to LA, my grandfather gave her his Masonic ring to take with her on the train. He told her that if she ran into any problems, to show the ring to any train engineer or conductor, and she would be helped. Mom still has the ring. **pauses** Maybe she could wear it to church, what with jewelry being okay and everything now. GreatLakesGramma
Woody, she wasn't talking about the kind of underwear we wear today. Back in her day, women wore multiple layers of petticoats underneath their dresses. Altogether, they added quite a bit of weight, which she said was too much to be suspended from the waist.
