Carageenan is an additive to enhance taste, I believe. I don't see how it could be present in homemade soy milk unless you add it.

Is it listed on the label? I'm pretty sure that Curtis & Paula Eakins would not recommend Silk Soy Milk if this was the case with Silk brand. They get no gain for choosing one above another. Just wondering what you think.

I like soy milk, so I had to look several times to make sure. Both Silk and the Walmart brand had carageenan added.

Been drinking almond breeze lately anyway except for the dark chocolate. I've looked at the list that tells what's put into it and I don't see that listed. Is is under a different name?

I am not aware of another name at this time, unless you see something about sea weed, because that's where it comes from, I think.

MSG, a potent excitotoxin comes under many different names. According to Dr. Blaylock, it comes under almost a dozen different names, such as: enzymes, hydrolyzed protein, etc. See the link provided by John 317.

I've been looking at this excitotoxin stuff enough today to conclude:

I'm just about ready to make the jump to full blown vegan!!! I was particularly impressed with how diet affects brain function. No wonder Sister White counsels on how diet impacts spiritual understanding.

Moving toward vegan is a worthy goal, but I keep reminding myself, one step at a time while making steady progress.

Actually have heard that goats milk is even better than cows milk. Have never heard of sheeps milk.

I love goat's milk and use it as much as I can (not all stores have it). Sheep's milk is used to make some feta cheese.

I made a sad discovery at the grocery store yesterday. I started reading again the ingredients of the 12-grain breads that I have been buying all along; this time more closely. And horrors! they have "enzymes" - read MSG, and cow milk! We're going to Earthfare today, a healthfood store in Boone. If they don't have healthier bread, I'll just have to learn how to bake it myself.

I'm beginning to wonder if the increase in autism may not be partly due to these excitotoxins destroying certain brain cells in the child's immature brain.

Gerry get yourself a breadmaker, have been making my own bread for years. I buy my flour from the ABC, at least I did when living in Lancaster, MA. Down here in FL its a little further away. But there is a health food store that is run by a SDA that has really great stuff, its also a little drive but not as far as the ABC. Anyway good luck with baking your own bread.

I bought a breadmaker a few years ago. I still have to take it out of the box! LOL!!!

I saw one at the Goodwill store the other day, first time I've seen one. Still in the box, looked brand new.... :)

I just use our KitchenAid mixer for kneading the bread and bake it in the oven. Never could manage to get a decent loaf of bread out of a bread machine.

That's great. I've had a few breads that didn't come out good either, but you need to experiment to get it right sometimes. :)

Buy it? The break maker thing at the Goodwill? I didn't even know what it WAS? I picked up the box and had to read it to figure out what kind of contraption it was. Me.... make bread? Whoa, theres a concept!

I did buy a used steam iron though, which is why I went there (6 bucks, got a nice one, like new). No need to buy a new iron to press my shirt collars for church once a week. :)

A friend told me I shouldn't eat a freshly baked bread. Is that true? Why not?

Not sure, but I do recall years ago people saying that about things that had baking powder and/or baking soda. Something about getting an upset stomach?? I do know that most receipe's don't call for baking soda or powder.

Don't eat it while it is still warm after baking. You need to wait until it is cool and the yeast has quit 'working'.... Nuff Sed...

The majority of America's diet
Illustration of the Statue of Liberty holding a soda.

Stunning stat: 73% of America's food supply is made up of ultra-processed foods, like chips, candy bars and sodas.

  • These foods comprise 60% of the typical adult's diet and 66% of the typical kid's diet.

Why it matters: Junk food has been linked to a host of negative health effects, from obesity and diabetes to heart disease, depression, dementia and more, AP reports.

  • But the effects aren't limited to your physical health. It also hits your brain.
  • And studies show that junk food's share of U.S. adults' diets has increased over the past couple of decades.

🛒 Zoom in: It's tough to lower America's consumption of ultra-processed foods when they're piled high on grocery store shelves, are often cheaper than healthy foods, and can be addicting.

  • The money quote: "They have just the right combination of sugar, salt and fat, and you just can't stop eating them," says Neena Prasad, director of the Bloomberg Philanthropies' Food Policy Program.

🥦 Zoom out: Instead of denouncing certain foods altogether or obsessing over nutrition facts, it can be more effective to focus on the big things.

  1. Try to avoid foods with lots of added sugar or sky-high levels of sodium, which we know aren't great for us, Aviva Musicus, science director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, recommends.
  2. Try to add more fruits and vegetables to your plate. Both fresh and frozen count!
