doug yowell Posted January 20, 2012 Share Posted January 20, 2012 I think it's important to notice that Mrs. White didn't create any policy from a vision or from Divine inspiration but rather she agreed with the direction and rationale that the brethren had recommended. All these seemingly independent issues all connect with each other for SDA's and for EGW's critics.IOW the church didn't ask her what direction God wanted them to take before they issued any recommendations.It seems to me to show a great deal of unified thinking amongst the leadership of the church and the prophet. If we remember back to when Israel first became a nation under God, he setup the Jubilee system. which if we remember correctly had to do with people borrowing money, etc. and than not being able to pay it back. So what happened was that either you, depending how much you owed, or someone of your household would work this off. At that point you were considered a slave, so to speak. Of course also depending when this accrued within the jubilee or sabbatical year, you'd have so in so many years to work for this other man, than it was considered paid off and the end of the sabbatical or jubilee period. This I believe is what the Israelites or the Jews of Jesus' day would have known about slavery, even though they would at this point have been slaves to the Romans. From reading about this time period, even the Romans treated there slaves fairly well. Even today the Jews hire others to come in and do certain jobs for them so that they personally will not be breaking the Sabbath. In a sense this is a form of slavery. The point is that we can not try to equate the slavery of than to the slavery that we had here in the USofA as being one and the same. Far from it. And as someone already mentioned, even Paul told Onesemis(sp) to return to his master. So it seems its highly unlikely slavery than compared to slavery that we are talking about now.
