Jean Catherine Lord Luttrell fell asleep in Jesus on Jan. 22, 2012, at Florida Living Nursing Center, Apopka, Fla., following a short illness. She was 96. She is now awaiting the return of the Lifegiver when she will be re-united with her loving husband, Alton Cicero Luttrell, who preceded her in death in1985.

Jean was born at home Oct. 19, 1915, in Berkeley County, to Edgar Leon Lord and Jessie Maude Henrietta. She was the eighth of 15 children born to the Lord family. She had six stepbrothers and sisters born to Emily Catherine Miller Lord who died giving birth to her sixth child on Feb. 5, 1908. Her father married her mother, Jessie Maude, on Feb. 23, 1910. Her mother gave birth to nine children, six of whom survived past infancy into adulthood. All but one of her siblings preceded Jean in death.

Jean was born in the Tuscarora area of Berkeley County and grew up in the Spring Mills community. She met her future husband, Alton, at the many family social gatherings following his family's settling in Spring Mills. They were married on July 19, 1935. They made their home in the lovely countryside near Martinsburg. There she gave birth to daughter, Genevieve Catherine and son, Alton Lord. The family farm home is still fondly remembered by her family.

In 1941, the Lord family began attending the Seventh-day Adventist branch Sabbath School in Shepherdstown and following an evangelistic series, became members of the Martinsburg Seventh-day Adventist Church where her membership has been until her death. Following her husband's death, she and her daughter moved to Orlando, Fla., where she attended church at the Forest Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church in Apopka.

In 1950, the family moved to the farm and old farmhouse with history dating to before the Civil War and with an original Virginia title. It was there that they provided for their daily needs and livelihood. The truck farm operation provided fruits and vegetables for selling as well as the cutting and selling firewood providing for the family income.

In 1960, a tragic accident took the life of their son-in-law and severely injured their daughter and granddaughter, Dawn Juanita. Jean took on the task of caring for the recuperative needs of her family. Over the years, she provided support to both her children and their families as the need arose, always cheerful in the knowledge that she was doing the Lord's work in caring for those in need.

Jean is survived by a large extended family. Her sister, Irene Eleanor Riley, 86, Inwood; a sister-in-law, Gladys Lord, 94, Martinsburg; her daughter, Genevieve C. Emerson, of Wrangell Island, Alaska; her son, (Sonny) Alton Lord Luttrell, of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; her daughter-in-law, Irene Russell Luttrell, of Altamonte Springs; her granddaughter, Dawn Juanita Lynch, of Plains, Mont.; her grandson-in-law, Charles E. Lynch Jr., of Plains; her granddaughter, Kelly Luttrell Ackley, of Altamonte Springs; her grandson-in-law, Craig Ackley, of Altamonte Springs; her grandson, Jason Kyle Lord Luttrell, of Altamonte Springs; her granddaughter-in-law, Jodie Hoover Luttrell, of Altamonte Springs; great- grandsons, Logan and Lucas Izquierdo, of Altamonte Springs; many nieces and nephews, both Lord and Luttrell; and extended family great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren from Dawn's marriage.

She will be laid to rest in the early summer next to her loving husband Alton in the Chestnut Grove, Va., Cemetery. A memorial of her life will be planned when the family can gather at her graveside to celebrate her life.

A sad note must be added. Jean's son, Alton Lord (Sonny) Luttrell followed his mother in death on Jan. 31, 2012 in Altamonte Springs. He lost his long battle with Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease just nine days after his mother's passing. He was 67. Their families now mourn the loss of two loved ones who wait the call of the Lifegiver to their eternal reward. Even so, come Lord Jesus.
