Jack Holt Sloan

Jack Holt Sloan of Paso Robles was born in November of 1926, in Pasadena, Cailf. to parents Virgil and Ada Christman Sloan. He joined his older brother Richard Donald Sloan. The family moved to South Gate, Calif., where Jack attended local schools. A special event was playing his clarinet with the symphony at the Hollywood Bowl. Upon honors graduation from high school in 1944, at age 17 he enlisted in the Navy. He served as quartermaster (navigation and signaling) and was one of 42 enlisted men recalled from the Pacific fleet for a two-year naval officer training program (the V-12 program).

He attended UCLA, graduated from University of California, Berkeley, Calif. 1950, with a degree in chemical engineering. He spent the next nine years designing petroleum refineries and petrochemical plants in the United States, South America and Arabia and authoring start up manuals.

His engineering started at a refinery in Hanford, Calif., where he met Doris, who was receptionist for the refinery. She had graduated from College of Sequoias with an AA degree. After two years at the refinery, she was accepted to the University of Southern California School of Dentistry Dental Hygiene Bachelor of Science Curriculum. Upon her graduation, they were married July 24, 1955. After four years of marriage, night classes at USC and a 3-week-old baby girl, Linda, Jack enrolled at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry for the next four years. Son, Paul, was born during Jackís senior year. Jack had the honor of serving as class officer for four years and upon graduation received the California Dental Association award for commendable scholarship, clinical proficiency and leadership.

The family moved to Paso Robles in 1963 and established a dental/dental hygiene practice for the next 35 years. Jack served many years in the county dental society and was president 1987-88.

The Sloans donated dental services intermittently for 36 years in many remote areas of Mexico, the Chequa Indians of Ecuador and three months in Hangzhou, China at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, directing a new dental clinic- training Chinese dental personnel in western dental techniques, a year as president of the Alumni Association of the LLU School of Dentistry and life membership in the National Association of Seventh-day Adventist Dentists rounded out his professional associations.

Community involvement included Church elder, Templeton Hills SDA Church and school, 13 years on the Paso Robles Board of Education with three years as president, four years on the County Board of Education, Chamber of Commerce, 37 years with the Paso Robles Rotary Club and as president 1984-85. Jack was the founding president of the PR Swim Club, honored as ìPersonality of the Month, Sept. 1970. Retirement years found Jack and Doris working with the Paso Robles Community Police Volunteer program. He was named the Volunteer of the Year 2007. Paso Robles City Council presented him a plaque as City Volunteer April 2011.

His son, David, was born at the War Memorial Hospital, and all three children along with their parents participated in the Adventist Pathfinder Youth program (Jack & Doris for 21 years). 4-H, swim teams, water polo and scuba diving, and all enjoyed traveling.

In addition to Linda (Jim), Paul (Suzanne) and David (Susan), he is survived by four grandchildren Lauren, Brock, Kyler and Maui. The Sloans were selected as the Paso Robles Family of the Year in 1986.

Friends are invited to gather with the family for a committal service, Monday, April 2 at 11 a.m. at the Paso Robles District Cemetery with full military honors. A celebration of his life will then follow at 1 p.m. at the Templeton Hills Seventh Day Adventist Church in Templeton with Pastors Ivor Myers and Cliff Hoffman presiding. The family will then host a reception in Dr. Jackís honor at the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
