My friend and frequent opponent in discussions on this Forum is worthy of and needs our prayers. He is undergoing treatment for a serious problem and may even be having a new and serious surgery at this moment.

Let us all take a few moments of our time and offer up to our Heavenly Father a prayer for him and his surgeons, please. He is good man that loves the Lord with all his heart. May God be with him!!!

Jesus, my Beloved King, I ask Your special blessing on Gerry and his surgeons today. You are the Great Physician, and we are told with Your stripes we are healed. Jesus... it is sin that makes the surgery necessary... not Gerry's sin, but just that sin be in this world... and we know Your stripes will heal all.

Guide the hands of the surgeons, impress on their minds clarity of thought according to Your will. Allow all to work according to Your perfect pleasure for Gerry's life, and what is best, that we all may find one another before the glorious Throne, worshipping on the Sea of Glass.

I love You Jesus. Teach me how to love You more.

Thank You.

You are right, Dr. Ben. He is well respected here, one of our institutions

May the good Lord guide the surgeons and be near to Gerry, the team of doctors and to Gerry's family. May the presence of holy angels be felt by all and may God be glorified in this situation

Please bless him Lord and help him to remember that we care for him here- in Jesus' name

I do too. Precious Lord, be near to Gerry right now. Let Your infinite compassion and love answer the hour of his need. Grant wisdom to his doctors, skill and steady hands to his surgeon, and strength and health to his body for recovery. You are the Lord who heals all our diseases. Draw near with Your healing power to Gerry, I ask in Jesus' name and by the merit of His blood. Amen.

I found an address for him in Wildomar, CA via Zabasearch (city matches his profile). I was going to go ahead and order flowers for him tonight, though it is possible the address is not current - but I see that FTD does not deliver Saturday in California, or Sunday or Monday. I will get the address confirmed before doing anything, since there seems we are forced to wait (unless someone closer to his location can do this for us sooner).

All I know is that he told me by PM that he was having surgery today at UC Irvine hospital. Tomorrow I will attempt to get more information. However, with the new privacy laws in the US I doubt the hospital will give me, even as a physician, any information. But whatever I learn I will pass on soon as possible. If he is in ICU, which I suspect he will be until tomorrow at least, they usually will not accept flowers anyhow----until he gets back to his ward room.

11 p.m. Friday evening---I just called the Univ of Calif, Irvine Medical Center. I was able to speak with his nurse who said he was doing well and was not asking for any pain medicine. He has been alert but currently was sleeping. I didn't want to disturb him. They will accept flowers.

I asked how long he might be in the hospital. The nurse said he might go home tomorrow, she didn't know. (while I know his surgery was potentially serious, it was done with a new technique) He is doing well with no signs of any problems during the surgery or complications so far.

Nowadays hospital stays are often very short unless there is complication of some kind or other.

I asked if I could call tomorrow and they said OK--about 9 a.m. Hopefully I can talk with him then.

I will post ASAP after my call tomorrow morning. I would wait on the flowers until after I call. Flowers might not even get to his room before he leaves IF he goes home early.

I'll let you all know by post on this thread after 9 a.m.

FWIW it is often 1/2 the price or less, if you call a florist in the town where you want things sent to. FTD adds on a lot..

I am off now until late tonight...

I just spoke with Gerry via his room telephone at the UCI,Irvive Medical Center hospital. He is alert, doing well and will be discharged this morning. So flowers if sent would likely not get to him before he leaves which would be around noon, I suspect.

His surgery, which I will leave to him to tell you about if at all, was done by the very latest new technigue assisted by robot (!). Being an older surgeon retired now for 11 yrs, I find major changes have occurred and are occurring all the time--as they did when I was in practice. I was in on the laparoscopic techniques at first, but knowledge in that line as in others is expanding rapidly---and I am 'out of the loop'.

So, Gerry is doing very well and expected to continue to make a rapid recovery. Believe me, though, the surgery in the 'olden' days was major. With this new robotic technique I am amazed that Gerry is going home 'the next day' and feeling little pain.

I do not know his home address but his family mailing addres is PO Box 220, Wildomar, CA, 92595. I'm sure he would be delighted to receive your cards of 'caring love'.

I've been home six hours but couldn't keep off the forum. It's true, I pretty much live here. Friends, to find me as the object of your concern & prayers choked me up. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ALL. GOD IS SO GOOD!!! And to have such friends that I have never met except for Dr. Ben, wow!!!

What Dr. Ben said about the old surgical technique for the condition that I was treated for was too terrible for me. It was last among the options I considered. I was not going to tell you lest I be thought of as trying to get sympathy, but since you are all sympathetic anyway, and more importantly, for the sake of the men in this forum I am going to divulge it.

You men who are 50 & up, get a PSA (screening test for prostate cancer) & a digital exam. If you are Afro-Am or have a family history of prostate cancer, you should have the test keven much sooner. A digital exam is not some breakthrough in medicine like my niece's husband thought, it is not 0 & 1, but the good old finger digit. I had been doing my PSA since I turned 50 & have always been negative. But last summer it became elevated. I repeated it several weeks later & it was still positive. I went to a urologist who gave me the digit - al exam, & because it felt normal, advised me to take antibiotics because prostatitis (an infection) can also cause elevation. When it was repeated, it was still high. To make a long story short, I have biopsy done which turned out to be fairly high grade cancer. I've been practically a vegetarian since high school. I've taken only two puffs of smoke in my life, and the amount of alcohol I have consumed does not amount to one small glass. So don't think that the SDA lifestyle makes you impervious to this particular cancer.

The old technology resulted in very high rate of incontinence which was what I dreaded the most, anywhere from 20-80% depending on who was doing it. Impotence was nearly 80% or higher. With robotic surgery, this has been reduced to 1% incontinence & about 30% impotence. Any of you that are interested can go to the UCI Urology Website. Loma Linda just did their first case 3 wks ago, but I did not want to be #2 or 4 in their series.

Again thank you all, friends. Please, NO flowers. That is very kind & thoughtful of you. If you want, donate to the forum for Stan to improve it any way he can.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!! Someday I want to meet all of you, and I hope that day will be soon. And thank you Ben, for asking prayers on my behalf. We may not see eye to eye on many theological matters, but as Eph 2:14 says, Christ is our peace who has made all one.

Good to hear from you. Good idea about donating to CA instead of flowers, if you insist. Will do.

Prayers for your continued recovery,

Just an addendum about PSA testing. If you are 80+ yo, the test would be superfluous because you would probably die of something else before prostate ca would do you in. At age 75+, many physicians if not most, would not take the initiative to suggest PSA testing for the same reason although they would do it if you request, but IMO, no matter what age you are, if you have a life-expectancy of over 10 yrs, the test is probably worthwhile.

It is so good to see you here posting, I was away, and was only able to login just to get the message you were ill. I do know that a lot of prayers went heavenwards specifically for you. Appreciate Dr Ben keeping us informed, as you must have informed him.

Being on 'the other end' of medicine is 'interesting' isn't it?

Above all, I wish you good health..

Courage

And tagging on to what Stan said,

I am so happy that all is well, that all went well, and that you are back with us so soon. May you continue to have a speedy and complete recovery

How lovely upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news!

Thanks Gerry (and I join the delight that it went well for you!)

That's not only a great reminder for those of us who have prostates to keep oon top of our screening (I had booked a medical exam for this afternoon even before reading this story!), but it's also *hugely* encouraging to hear that the outcomes are so much better than they used to be.

On-going prayers for your continued health.

It concerns me that it took from the first signs last summer until now to get the cancer diagnosed. I can't help but wonder if managed care is sometimes at fault for situations like this - although I know that nothing is for certain sure in medicine.
