liketowrite
When mission spotlights first came out they were quite the thing and everyone seemed delighted. However as I got older so did the mission spotlight medium and instead of being fresh they became at first a blast from the past and then like something trapped in a time warp -unable to adapt to changing times and technology, not longer greated by the church with enthusiasm, but sometimes groans. I am sorry to see a dear soul who contribulted much die. I am glad however, that his death may allow the church to look at new and different ways of reporting mission activity to the churches. His mission spotlight was ahead of its time when it came out and so should any new venture of sharing missions be visionary. The church should always respond when visionary men have an idea of value and I for one, am eager to see someone respond to the challenge of reporting, because missions have changed over the last few decades every bit as much as have the manner in which they are reported. May God bless him for his service to a cause he believed in and may others build upon his success. How far from home? TC
Joe_in_RP
Well TC, you have been in the church a while. I have only been here eight years. I love every one. I have many and have watched them many times. I love the format. I can tell you the one on the Philippines is very acurate. Then again I love overseas work. liketowrite
I used to be responsible for passing the mission spotlight on the next church in line and at conference meetings I found that a significant number never used the program because the membership did want to see them. For those who haven't ever done this let me explain that the whole unit comes as a package and your church views it this week and then the next nearest church gets it the following week and so on. If the next nearest church is fifty miles, well brother you are driving a hundred mile round trip there this week. I don't say that people don't watch it to be mean, just to illustrate that as our membership changes so must too the methods used to reach and excite them over missions. I love missions as well, but if we are going to promote them, let's at least do so, in a way that people actually get to see the promotional material. Loving missions does not mean that I can't see the possabilities of moving into digial video. I'd like to see video downlinks available for every mission field online at the GC website. If I want to know about a cetain area's work all I would have to do is click a mouse a couple of times. Many churches now have multimedea setups that are quite capable of handling things more technical than slide presentations. If they insist on that format at least make it into a powerpoint file and just send out the CD. If would be far more time and cost effective than the way they do it. Further everyone could then see the presentation on the same Sabbath. As I said before I praise this dear brother for his visionary work. I just desire the visionary work may continue and that we don't sit content thinking that we have achieved all we need to. How far from home? Since Ginger started the announcing or hosting, I've seen it as a great improvement. I agree, in the past it was difficult to sit through it, because of our exposure to TV etc. "blast from the past" but since we can't have first hand accounts of mission successes, this is the next best thing. Let's face it, not all branches of the church have been blessed with the lastest means of moving foreward so we need to learn patience and make timely suggestions. Quote Wakan Tanka Kici Un ~~Child of Christ~~
liketowrite
Mission Videos? My conference must still be back in the dark ages. Maybe I'll encourage them a little. How far from home? TC
darlene
And here I thought Canada was behind times! We've been receiving Mission Spotlight in video format for several years and I expect them to be coming out in DVD format soon. I too remember when they were in slide format. Let me tell you!!! Our conference had six sets, with 3 programs in each set. I used to have to address all the labels and that took 6 hours every quarter. What a drag, but the worst of all was when one got lost in the mail or some church forgot to mail it on to the next church in time. Then the fun began...trying to find out what had gone wrong and where they were. They took so much work, but our churches just loved them and that made it worth all the effort. Today as Sabbath School director, our churches still love them and still over 75% of our churches get and use them. Oscar Heinrichs made a wonderful contribution to our church and Ginger is continuing to carry on where he left off.
Moderators LynnDel Posted January 11, 2003 Moderators Share Posted January 11, 2003 I've always found Mission Spotlight inspiring, in spite of sometimes stilted presentation. I don't often have the opportunity to see it, since I've been off having fun in the Junior Division for uncounted years. LynnDel Quote LD

I understand it is his daughter that is narrating the videos now and the reports are up to date and very much needed in small churches especially. Our church is very small and some members have NEVER been to another SDA church. So they would get the impression that we are a handful of different people who have distinct beliefs which they share, but with mission spotlight they see the church is worldwide and has quality music, education, health, etc. Get your church to update it's mission reports and enjoy them.
