Pkrause, writing in post # 112, links to an article by Jeff Jacoby, titled "Beheadings & Islam."  That article cites Sura 47:4.  That article actually was based in part on an article by Timothy Furnish, published in the MIDDLE EAST QUARTERLY.  The article by Furnish was more scholarly than that of Jacoby.  I will suggest that Jacoby did not fully understand the context of the admonitions to behead that are found in the Quran.

 

NOTE:  The Quran is considered to exist only in Arabic.  I am citing an authorized translation ilnto the English language.

 

Sura 47:4  says:

Therefore, when ye meet {4820} the Unbelievers (in fight), Smite at their necks; At length, when ye have Thoroughly subdued them, Bind (the captives) {4821} Firmly:  therefore (Is the time for ) Either Generosity or ransom {4822}:  Until the war lays down Its burdens.  Thus (are ye Commanded):  but if it Had been Allah's Will, He could certainly have exacted Retribution from them (himself): But (He lets you fight) In order to test you {4823},  Some with others,  But those who are slain {4824}In the way of Allah, He will never let Their deeds be lost.

 

NOTE:  In my quotations I preserve the  capitalization.

 

Here is what an authorized Islamic commentary says about the above Sura:

4820  When once the fight (jihad) is entered upon, carry it out with the utmost vigour, and strike home your blows at the34 most vital points (smite at their necks), both literally and figuratively.  You cannot wage war with kid gloves.  4821  In the first onset, there must necessarily be great loss of life; "after the enemy's numbers are fairly thinned down, prisoners may be taken".  With this passage may e compared to viii. 67 and n. 1234.  4822 When once the enemy is brought under control, generosity (i.e. the release of prisoners without ransom) or ransom is recommended. 4823 The Believers are tested in Faith by the extent to which they are willing to make sacrifices, even to the laying down of their lives; and the enemies are tested as to whether they would repent and let the righteous live in freedom and security.  48247  There are two alternative readings,  (1) qatalu, "those who fight".  and (2) qutilu, "those who are slain".  The meaning under the first reading is wider and includes that under the second.  I have translated on the basis of the second e reading, which is in accordance with the text of the Royal Egyptian edition..

 

It should be noted that Sura 47:4 is understood to apply to war and that once people were taken prisoner, they were to be treated with generosity.

 

Sura 8: 12 says:

Remember they Lord inspired the angels (with the message): . . . I will instil terror Into the hearts of Unbelievers:  Smite ye above their necks ANd smite all their Finger-tipe off them.  {1189}

 

Again here is what an authorized Islamic commentary says about the above:

1189  The vulnerable parts of an armed man are above the neck.  a blow on the neck, face or head, finishes him off.  If he has armour it is difficult to get at his heart.  But if his hands are put out of action, he is unable to wield his sword or lance or other weapon, and easily becomes a prisoner.

 

 

IOW, it can be said that the commands of the Quran are specific to armed conflict (war) and that prisoners were to be treated well.  IOW, what we are seeing done to individuals who have been taken prisoner is outside of the quran and not Islamic.  Jacoby has failed to understand what he is writing about.
