Jacquelyn Martin/AP States cannot keep same-sex couples from marrying and must recognize their unions, the Supreme Court says in a ruling that for months has been the focus of speculation. The ruling was made by a 5-4 decision. The justices ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges, which is linked to three other cases. Together, they involve a dozen couples who challenged same-sex marriage bans in Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky and Tennessee – the only states whose bans on marriage between gay and lesbian couples had been sustained by a federal appeals court. Today's ruling overturned that decision by the 6th Circuit Court. As the Supreme Court's summary states, "The history of marriage is one of both continuity and change." The justices had been asked to decide whether the Fourteenth Amendment requires states to a) license same-sex marriages and recognize such unions that were made in other states. The Fourteenth Amendment, we'll remind you, was ratified shortly after the Civil War. It has to do with U.S. citizenship – and with providing equal protection for all citizens. Before Friday's ruling, gay marriage had already been made legal in 37 states – by either legislative or voter action or by federal courts that overturned state' bans. As NPR's Nina Totenberg reported when the Supreme Court heard the current case back in April, conservative justices had pointed questions for the attorneys: "Justice Scalia asked whether ministers would be able to refuse to marry two gay men. The answer was that it has to be worked out under state laws. He said, but that could happen — it could happen that a minister would be forced to marry two gay men, in violation of his beliefs. "Justice Alito asked, well then why not marry four gay men together? Why just two?" The ruling announced Friday adds new definition to an issue that has remained controversial even as an increasing number of Americans say they support equal marriage rights for same-sex couples. A recent Gallup poll found that 60 percent of Americans – an all-time high – support extending the same rights and privileges to same-sex marriages as traditional ones. That figure included "37 percent of Republicans, 64 percent of independents, and 76 percent of Democrats," as we reported last month. And it included all age groups except for one: those 65 and over. The court noted the change in thinking, stating: "Well into the 20th century, many States condemned same-sex intimacy as immoral, and homosexuality was treated as an illness. Later in the century, cultural and political developments allowed same-sex couples to lead more open and public lives. Extensive public and private dialogue followed, along with shifts in public attitudes. Questions about the legal treatment of gays and lesbians soon reached the courts, where they could be discussed in the formal discourse of the law." For supporters of same-sex marriage, today's ruling comes as a long-awaited bookend to the Supreme Court's 2013 ruling that struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act and required the U.S. government to provide the same benefits to both gay and heterosexual couples. ................................................................................................ GayatfootofCross
Dear opponents of marriage equality: While today is a victory for LGBT rights, it is not a defeat for you. Nothing has been taken away from you. You can still marry and divorce. You can still worship in any church you choose (and most likely with an amount of security few of the rest of us might enjoy), your clergy can still marry or not marry anyone they choose, your children are still protected by federal laws, your jobs are still protected, you can freely hold the hand of your spouse in public and even kiss them in front of God and everyone without fear, you cannot be discriminated against in housing or accommodations and your religious denominations can bar same-sex marriages from occurring in your sanctuaries or on your properties. What happened today was the expansion of many of those rights and privileges (sadly, not all of them) to another group of human beings -- humans who are made in God's image and loved by God just as you are. That, I understand, may be the hardest pill for you to swallow on this day, and I pray, just as Martin Luther King Jr. did for his enemies, that one day your hearts will turn and you will be converted into friends and allies and our movement for equality will enjoy a double victory. GayatfootofCross
There's pretty much no middle ground on my facebook feed this morning. About 3/4 of my friends are overjoyed at the US Supreme Court's Decision to enforce marriage equality in all 50 states while the other 1/4 are calling it one of the horsemen of the apocalypse. It shouldn't be much surprise to any of you that I'm with the majority who support equal rights, but I have to shake my head at the minority. The United States is a country that has a massive racism problem, a massive violence problem, a massive greed problem, a massive war problem and a massive injustice problem; and you think God's going to judge you because people are equal before the law? ............................................ Circle, Columbia, SC Christians who refuse to cater to gays can also now potentially be sued by gay activists and incarcerated by the government; and faith-based organizations that out of conscience (right or wrong) can lose thie tax-free status and/or any federal grants or contracts if they refuse service to gays (i.e., the door has been opened for legal persecution of Christians who are simply following what they believe to be God's word). You, being a believer, may not partake in those activities; but we both know there are anti-Christian gay activists that are chomping at the bit for this opportunity. While I may not agree with those who would refuse service to gays, I am adamantly against restricting the religious liberty of those who are simply following what they see as God's Word. Signed with love, Rev. Candace Chellew-Hodge, Jubilee! Circle, Columbia, SC what you write is superficial at best. This devalues marriage. Marriage is only valid if it has value attached to it, and marriage has been de-valued long before this ruling. It started with ease of divorce and no fault divorce. then came living together and casual marriage. The big problem you will face in the future is moral relativism. Gay marriage proponents also want to restrict marriage to others who can offer love and pleasure to each other. The argument to restrict marriage again will be lost on the grounds of moral relativism-who gives you the right to restrict marriage to others who want in? This will take happen, but it will take some time for this to become reality. This will culminate in economic sanctions against those who hold to a moral standard that God gave us. It will happen, but it will take time. This should be welcomed by those who stand strong in their faith. The universal church of all believers is likened to a body, and a body that sells itself and depends on money is the definition of a whore. Secular humanism and moral relativism is a weak culture. A church that marries these ideologies also is weak, and this is why we see our children leaving the faith in droves once they enter college or university. This has all been done before, the Bible is complete with examples of Israel doing the same. This is the time for those who adhere to the wisdom and guidance of the bible to overtake culture. The culture is weak, and creates a vacuum for a stronger culture to overcome it. if we dont, a stronger culture will come in judgment-like Islam. The faithful will have to live a live of selfless devotion and put their emphasis on family and take much more time to raise them and teach them instead of pursuing individualism and materialism. It is all contained in the wisdom of the Bible. In a generation this could be turned around. It will take selfless love and devotion though

B/W Photodude
This is Huge for Christians to get. There are a few problems with this pastor's interpretation of things. 1. As usual, he seems to be saying because others do something wrong, engaging in (whatever your hobby horse of the moment is) is OK. So, no you don't support "equality" with a smile on your face. 2. Getting a divorce is different than a lifestyle. Engaging continuously in a sinful lifestyle is different than a sinful event. I would more equate divorce with a one time act of homosexual behavior that is repented of, but you cannot equate divorce with a continuing state of being such as living a gay lifestyle. 3. I suspect the pastor may not be familiar enough with his Bible to really preach on the topic when he says the Bible does not list any consequences for immoral behavior: "But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8 The 2nd death kinda sounds like a consequence to me! 8thdaypriest 1 Quote >>>Texts in blue type are quotes<<< ***************************************************************************** And therefore as a stranger give it welcome. B/W Photodude
The point I saw was that many fine people say This decision by the Court will lead to God's wrath... not any other sins we are guilty of did us (as a Nation) in. As I recall, most of the recent SCOTUS decisions in the area of sexuality have been decisions that support homosexuality or remove penalties for homosexual behaviors. The thing that sets this decision apart from all other subjects being discussed is that it becomes an official policy and practice of this country. While divorce and adultery are other examples of immoral behaviors, they remain in the behavior of the population and are not official government policy. This new decision stand out also because it becomes a direct fulfillment of a Bible prophecy regarding the last days resembling Sodom and Gommorah. As far as God's wrath, as I read my Bible and Spirit of Prophecy, I do not really see God's wrath pouring out even because of these decisions. (I would appreciate being disabused of this idea!) What I do see in prophecy as the last days approach is that God is withdrawing protection from this earth and allowing Satan to do whatever he wishes in increasing intensity and destruction. Unfortunately, Satan has no love for anyone on this earth, not even those who are openly evil and will destroy whomever he is able to. I tend to believe that God's wrath is reserved for the seven last plagues and will be for everyone who engages in evil of any kind and who do not worship God. It is unfortunate that every plague and pestilence that occurs today is credited to God. JoeMo
The courts may be able to define marriage in a legal sense, but it is God that defines it from a spiritual sense. “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? (Matt. 19.4-5; Mark 10:6-7) " Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. (Eph.5:25-31) Secular definitions do NOT supercede divine definitions. Should gay people want to get married, they are welcome to do so in a civil ceremony. I would even attend the wedding! But I draw the line at asking God to sanction and bless something He never deemed as blessed in His law. Gays have every right to be happy and fulfilled; but the SCOTUS (nor any other world authorty) does not have the authority to declare gay marriage as a sacred right. But hey, that is just my opinion. LifeHiscost
It is unfortunate that every plague and pestilence that occurs today is credited to God. However we can still hold on to this promise irregardless of the calamity. 28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.Romans 8 However God always takes responsibility for all that occurs in His cosmos. 37 Who can command things to happen without the Lord’s permission?38 Does not the Most High send both calamity and good?39 Then why should we, mere humans, complain when we are punished for our sins?.....Lamentations 3 God is Love! Which is why I wrote, "What I do see in prophecy as the last days approach is that God is withdrawing protection from this earth and allowing Satan to do whatever he wishes in increasing intensity and destruction." Obviously, I think, if Satan does anything because God withdraws protection, it is because he is allowing it to happen. It continues to be more of just allowing the full evilness of sin to be developed. 8thdaypriest
It is not really clear, from the scriptures, that a fetus is equal with a breathing person. I know there are a couple of things about the LORD knowing someone from the womb, or in the womb, or a fetus leaping in Elizabeth's womb. So the SCOTUS ruling on abortion might not be regarded as clearly - in terms of God's Law - as this latest ruling on Gay Marriage. Homosexuality is clearly condemned as "an abomination" in the Torah and Apostolic Writings. What the highest court in our nation esssentially SAID on Friday, was that this nation is NOT under Judeo-Christian Law. Essentially - we recognize NO GOD. That's what they said. That being said, I don't think they should hold a prayer breakfast, or celebrate a national day of prayer. This nation - as a nation - recognizes NO GOD. Now - how will God respond? We'll have to wait to see. I do not foresee great blessings coming henceforth, for this nation.
