Moderators Kevin H Posted July 13, 2015 Moderators Posted July 13, 2015 Our church use to be very much into the archaeology. People like Lynn Harper Wood, Dr. Theile, Dr. Horn etc. Sadly since the 1980s we have started going more to church history and reformation studies and studying more the style of Chuck Swindall, et.el. and getting away from serious Bible study and archaeology. There are aspects of the investigative judgment that are clearer from archaeology. There are things about the law/grace/Sabbath debate that are clearer from archeology. The issue of women's ordination would have been resolved. Since the mid 1800s we have been in an explosion of Biblical knowledge where we can investigate the Bible as never before. However we are just reading and speculating on the words. And we are reading what others read and speculate on the words. After our pioneers and our great heroes who wrote the SDA Bible Commentary, we have stopped investigating the pages of scripture in light of these discoveries. Is this part of the investigative judgment? Is our return to pre-mid 1800 approaches to Bible study the worshiping in the holy place instead of going with Jesus into the most holy place and allowing Satan to lull us to sleep in our reading the text and speculating? Are the events in San Antonio the result of refusing to enter with Christ into the most holy place like J. N. Andrews, W. W. Prescott, Lynn Harper Wood, Dr. Theile and Dr. Horn and others use to do?Thank you so much for sharing this article. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted July 14, 2015 Moderators Posted July 14, 2015 Archaeology is a mixed bag. Sometimes it will seem to support the Bible and sometimes it will seem to contradict the Bible. It is not infallible. However, it is important. Kevin H 1 Quote Gregory
Moderators Kevin H Posted July 14, 2015 Moderators Posted July 14, 2015 As Dr. Fleming pointed out in that youtube I shared; at times when it appears to contradict the Bible it is because the archaeologist wants his own dates and original things hoping that he will be the new standard. Also, there is a fear of too much supporting the Bible so they may be looking for things to try to make it different. In these cases we can still evaluate the evidence and maybe come up with our own conclusions. However there are indeed places where the evidence does seem to contradict the Bible, but I have found that often it is not really contradicting the Bible but our understanding of what we expect the Bible to say due to our traditions. phkrause 1 Quote
Moderators Kevin H Posted July 14, 2015 Moderators Posted July 14, 2015 Yes indeed Dr. Geraty. However I left him out for 2 reasons: First being too afraid that I was going to mess up the spelling of his name. (Fortunately I found it online just now). But also the church's shift that I am whining about has moved him out of the position where he should be. We don't respect our archaeologists today as we did in the 1950s. A sad part of this was in this sad General Conference he was given 2 minutes to speak. As he was coming up to speak there were some delegates who just "happened" to be in his way delaying his approach to the microphone. The chairman up front started his two minutes from the moment he left his seat and the delegates that got in his way ended up taking a large amount of his 2 minutes so he had to be cut short. If we had treated Dr. Horn or Dr. Thiele this disrespectful way our members would have been in an uproar. phkrause 1 Quote

Photo: Andrew Medichini/AP The ruins of Emperor Nero's lost theater — referred to in ancient Roman texts, but never found — have been discovered under the garden of a future Four Seasons Hotel, steps from the Vatican. Why it matters: The findings provide a rare look at a stratum of Roman history from the Roman Empire through to the 15th century. Among the discoveries: 10th-century goblets and pottery pieces that are unusual because so little is known about this period in Rome, AP reports. Archaeologists found marble columns and gold-leaf decorated plaster, leading them to conclude that Nero's Theater — referred to in texts by Pliny the Elder, an ancient Roman author and philosopher — was indeed there, just off the Tiber River. Previously only seven glass chalices from that era had been found. The excavations of this one site turned up seven more. Archaeologists had excavated deep under the walled garden of the Palazzo della Rovere since 2020 as part of planned renovations on the frescoed Renaissance building, The palazzo takes up a city block along the broad Via della Conciliazione leading to St. Peter's Square. 🔮 What's next: The portable antiquities will be moved to a museum. The ruins of the theater will be covered again after all studies are completed. The hotel is expected to be open for the Vatican's Jubilee 2025, when 30 million people are expected to flock to Rome.
