If you visit the City of David Archaeological Park in Jerusalem, you would easily think it is the large pool, formerly known as Birkat el-Hamra, that has been excavated since 2004 near the southern end of the ridge. However, Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist Nahshon Szanton believes this identification is almost certainly incorrect. Recently, the repertoire of the Huqoq mosaics grew yet again, when archaeologists revealed impressive panels depicting Deborah and Jael (also spelled Yael), the heroines of Judges 4–5. Predating the next earliest depictions of these figures by about a thousand years, these mosaic panels reflect the importance of biblical women leaders in the first few centuries of the Common Era. Dated to the end of the third millennium BCE, the fortification, which encircled the oasis, stretched 9 miles and likely stood around 16 feet tall. More interestingly, was the gate built to commemorate Nebuchadnezzar’s conquest of Jerusalem in 586 BCE, much as the Arch of Titus commemorated Rome’s sacking of the Second Temple more than six and a half centuries later? While the obvious answer is that they were the descendants of the 12 sons of Jacob, things are not nearly so clear, depending on where you look in the Hebrew Bible.
