Members phkrause
Herman Wouk, the Pulitzer Prize winning and bestselling author, has died at the age of 103, just ten days short of his 104th birthday. His long career spanned a tumultuous time in American Jewish history, as many first and second generation Jews assimilated and shed their Jewish identities. https://www.aish.com/jw/s/Herman-Wouk-and-Jewish-Tradition.html? Quote phkrause By the decree enforcing the institution of the papacy in violation of the law of God, our nation will disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan and that the end is near. {5T 451.1}

GHansen
Wouk's This is my God was highly recommended by the Jewish Chaplain at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. He said it was an excellent explanation of the Jewish religion. Interesting that Wouk started Talmud studies instead of Torah studies. At Cedars, the chaplain, Levi Meier, studied the Torah, which he knew mostly by heart, in Hebrew; consequently, when one would refer to a Torah passage in English, he would translate it back into Hebrew, so he could locate it. Isaac Singer's books are also an excellent source of insights into Judaism, especially "In my Father's Court". Moderators Kevin H Posted May 20, 2019 Moderators Share Posted May 20, 2019 One of the required readings at Andrews for "Jewish Life and Thought" class was Wouk's "This is my God" and it became one of my favorite books. Sad to hear of his death, but grateful for his ministry and his love for God. phkrause
