Administrators Gail Posted August 3, 2006 Administrators Share Posted August 3, 2006 I think I know what Stan is talking about here: We don't hear talk these days about self-denial, overcoming sin, defiing what exactly IS sin, bearing one's cross, etc When I first came into the church, I came out of a lifestyle where I was morally ignorant. It was helpful to me when I had those things explained to me. Probably it's what the Bible calls instruction in righteousness Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. Dr. Shane Posted August 3, 2006 Share Posted August 3, 2006 There are healthy ways to talk about sin and unhealthy ways to talk about it. Yet ignoring it is never healthy. When we pretend that sin isn't sin we do ourselves no service. Sin does damage either to our relationship with God or our relationships with others and often times both. When we continue in sin we pay the price. A healthy way to talk about sin is to discuss its consequences and a means to escape. There are many sins that church members struggle with like procastination, pride, appetite, judgmentalism, indifferance, gossip, unforgiviness, lust, lying, coveting, Sabbath breaking, etc. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Unfortunately they bury many people in their denial. But, Jesus said if we wanted to walk with Him we were to deny ourselves. To obey is BETTER than sacrifice. "Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart" (Psalm 119:111). Each of us are a vessel. The Lord wants to fill us with Himself. That is why we should be greatful when someone points out sin in our lives. It is like a doctor diagnosing us with an illness. Until we know what is wrong, we cannot seek help. Once I realize I have a problem with control issues, jealousy, procastination, gossip, lust, resentments or whatever, then I can take it to the Lord and deal with it. I know it is a conscious effort to make those changes by asking the Lord to guide us and intervene. Again we must make the effort to effect those changes from within.
