🦠 COVID "Russian roulette"

A recent uptick in COVID cases and hospitalizations hints at how the virus will keep raising a predictable seasonal threat.

  • Why it matters: Experts warn the U.S. is lacking critical tools to help manage future waves, Axios' Sabrina Moreno reports.

🖼️ The big picture: Critical tools and resources have gone away with the end of the public health emergency.

  • Tracking the virus' spread has become more challenging, and Americans now have less access to free tests and treatments.

The bottom line: "It's kind of Russian roulette" for the most vulnerable, said Jill Foster, an infectious disease expert at the University of Minnesota.

A lot of people are getting sick and it’s pneumonia like symptoms.

many are hospitalized

they all tell me that it’s not Covid because they were tested negative

I’m  just wondering if the tests are for the original covid strains and can’t keep up with the variants??

Rahab:  Good and valid question.  As I understand it, the COVID tests are not specific to the various strains.  However,  I am not certain that all tests test equally for every strain.  I will attempt to check on this.

I have checked and I find the following:  The common tests used at home test equally for all strains.  Yes, medical and  research facilities can use tests that are specific to various strains, as i understand it.

NOTE:  PCR home tests are more accurate than are antigen home tests.

Did FDA Recently 'Admit' That Doctors Can Prescribe Ivermectin For COVID-19?

The FDA does not, and has not, prohibited doctors from prescribing any drugs for off-label uses.

Claim:
In August 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reversed course and admitted that doctors would be allowed to prescribe ivermectin for treatment of COVID-19.
Rating:

Context

The FDA has never asserted that the off-label prescribing of ivermectin for COVID-19 was prohibited; the agency has reiterated this point in court and in public filings many times prior to August 2023.

😷 Signs of late-summer COVID wave

mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdatawrapper.dwcdn
Data: CDC. (Change in average weekly rate at a sample of 6,000 hospitals, from June 4 to July 1 and July 2-29.) Map: Kavya Beheraj/Axios

If you've noticed a sudden rise in the number of people wearing masks while you're out and about lately, here's why: COVID is on the upswing again, Axios' Alex Fitzpatrick and Kavya Beheraj report.

  • Why it matters: Simply put, our guard is down.

🧮 By the numbers: The average COVID hospitalization rate nationwide rose about 17% between June and July, per the latest available CDC data.

  • With so little testing happening these days compared to the height of the pandemic, hospitalization rates are now one of the best proxies for estimating broader viral spread.

Interactive version of this map, with state-by-state data.

🎒 Schools' new COVID fight

A late-summer COVID surge is prompting some school districts to reinstate measures to protect students and teachers, including limited masking.

  • Why it matters: There's no consensus among public health experts about how schools should deal with COVID this fall. Widespread closings are a non-starter, Axios' Adriel Bettelheim and Maya Goldman report.

What's happening: Officials in red and blue states insist broad mask mandates won't return.

  • L.A. schools, which had some of the strictest COVID measures in the country, are maintaining an optional masking policy, saying kids can come to school with mild illness, as long as they don't have a fever, to combat high absence rates, the L.A. Times reports.
  • Philadelphia schools imposed a safety plan that calls for students who test positive to isolate for five days, then wear masks for five days on return.
  • In Alabama, rising case counts prompted two school districts to bring back masking requirements.

🥊 Reality check: Administrators and local health officials have much less information about disease spread than they did during the height of the crisis. The CDC scaled back COVID data, and at-home testing has fallen off.

😷 COVID politics return with a vengeance

Top Republicans are using the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases to re-litigate controversial pandemic policies, including by disparaging the vaccines and pledging never to allow the return of lockdowns or mandates.

Why it matters: The COVID debate polarized the country and has continued to churn out red meat for the GOP base, with many Republicans viewing the early pandemic response as the epitome of government overreach.

Driving the news: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has staked his candidacy in large part around his record on COVID, criticized attempts to contain new virus outbreaks at a press conference today.

  • "People are lurching toward this insanity again," DeSantis said, promising that Florida would not join other states and cities in implementing temporary restrictions or mask mandates.
  • DeSantis' campaign then blasted out his comments in a press email vowing to "usher in a reckoning" for those responsible for "draconian COVID polices," including Trump officials.

Three minutes later, the Trump campaign circulated its own email accusing DeSantis of lying about his COVID record — and highlighting examples of the Florida governor praising the Trump administration's vaccine program.

  • In the Senate, meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) today tried to pass a resolution via unanimous consent that would have rescinded vaccine, testing and masking requirements for Senate pages.
  • Shortly after Paul's effort failed, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) unsuccessfully sought to pass a resolution barring the reimposition of federal mask mandates.

Masks don’t work.

If you are coughing and sneezing, they will act as a protectant against what you are emitting.   There is a reason medical folk wear them.

Masks don’t work.

Lets not forget that almost for two years we practically didn't have any colds, flu, etc., because of the precautions we took by wearing those masks. Also I believe a lot of people did more washing of hands than ever before. Also even before covid, I remember going to visit people at the hospital and seeing signs that said that if you had a cold please wear a mask!! So are they the end all? No, but they do help to protect! I know for me personally I have no problem wearing one, because not only does it protect me from others, but others from me, as best as we can!! That's my 2 cents worth of knowledge! 😀

True for sneezing and coughing but not for breathing.

I smoked for decades and have NO problem breathing with a mask on

Just saying a mask doesn’t stop the spread of the virus. Virus goes right through the fibers of a mask.

It’s ‘business as usual’ for many synagogues as COVID resurges ahead of the High Holidays

(JTA) — For synagogues across the country, it’s becoming a standard part of preparing for the High Holidays: Set up extra seating in the sanctuary. Make sure the shofars are in order. Take out the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur prayer books.
