Members phkrause Posted April 16, 2023 Author Members Posted April 16, 2023 Forecast for 2023 Hurricane Activity Current neutral ENSO conditions look fairly likely to transition to El Niño this summer/fall. However, there is considerable uncertainty as to how strong an El Niño would be, if it does develop. Sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central Atlantic are much warmer than normal, so if a robust El Niño does not develop, the potential still exists for a busy Atlantic hurricane season. Larger-than-normal uncertainty exists with this outlook. We anticipate a near-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean. As is the case with all hurricane seasons, coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season for them. They should prepare the same for every season, regardless of how much activity is predicted. https://tropical.colostate.edu/forecasting.html Quote phkrause Obstinacy is a barrier to all improvement. - ChL 60

Members phkrause Posted June 4, 2023 Author Members Posted June 4, 2023 Hurricane season heats up Temperatures in a crucial swath of the Atlantic Ocean where many tropical storms form are especially toasty as hurricane season begins, Axios' Andrew Freedman reports. Tropical Storm Arlene became the first named storm of the 2023 hurricane season today, per the National Hurricane Center. Why it matters: Scientists closely watch ocean temperatures in this area to help predict storm activity. 🌡️ Warmer water suggests a more active hurricane season ahead. 🖼️ The big picture: Trade winds usually tend to cool these waters down. This year, that's not expected to happen. Climate change is a major factor driving ocean temperatures higher. 🌊 A likely El Niño event in the tropical Pacific Ocean continues to form, with unusually warm sea surface temperatures at play there, too. Typically, these events make for less active Atlantic hurricane seasons, because of how they affect global weather patterns. 🤷♂️ The bottom line: This season is in nearly uncharted territory, with no consistent past lessons from which forecasters can draw. Michael Lowry, a hurricane specialist at Miami's WPLG Local 10, tells Axios: "We don't have many great analogs, in part because global sea surface temperatures have never been so warm."
