System brings 60 mph gusts, flood threat to Florida, NHC says 2nd system to become TS Vince

The National Hurricane Center no longer gives a system that brought gale-force winds and flooding to Florida this week a chance to develop into a tropical depression or storm, but chances have grown that another system in the Caribbean will form and the NHC says it will become Tropical Storm Vince.

'Category 5' was considered the worst hurricane. There's something scarier, study says.

As fearsome as Category 5 hurricanes can be for people living in harm's way, a new study reports global warming is supercharging some of the most intense cyclones with winds high enough to merit a hypothetical Category 6.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/02/05/category-6-hurricane-study-cites-climate-change/72426410007/

With climate change, is it time to consider a Category 6 hurricane?

In a warming world where rising ocean temperatures give fuel to a new breed of ultra-strong hurricanes, does a wind scale that maxes out at Category 5 go far enough?

2024 hurricane season brings new risks: WESH long-range forecast reveals crucial 'hot spots' for Florida

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is right around the corner, which is why for the last few months I've been working on my own hurricane seasonal forecast. This isn't your standard "X" number of storms style forecast- this is looking at weather patterns to give you an idea of "hot spots" for the season, along with "hot dates" on the calendar, so you can have an idea what the season will look like.

This was the deadliest hurricane in Florida history. Here’s what happened

The 2024 hurricane season is expected to be “impactful,” with a possibility to beat the record for the number of named storms in a single season.

2024’s ‘extremely active’ hurricane season could bring 23 named storms, experts say

Colorado State University’s annual April hurricane forecast is calling for an “extremely active” Atlantic hurricane season for 2024. A team of researchers estimates there will be 11 hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin — the most they’ve ever predicted in their April outlook.

🌀 DEFCON 1 hurricane forecast
mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgraphics.axios.co
Data: NOAA. Map: Erin Davis/Axios Visuals

Barring surprising changes, Americans should prepare for a potentially expensive, damaging and life-threatening Atlantic hurricane season, Axios extreme weather expert Andrew Freedman writes.

  • Why it matters: Hurricane seasons that featured a similar combination of factors have been among the most dangerous on record. But this year may have the most combustible mix yet.

Meteorologists at Colorado State University are calling for a staggering 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes and five major hurricanes.

  • The average season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major ones.

🚨 Threat level: A combination of two main factors is making forecasters go to DEFCON 1:

1. A waning El Niño in the tropical Pacific is forecast to quickly transition into a La Niña by the fall — during the heart of hurricane season. (What that means.)

  • Wind changes associated with a La Niña event make the environment in the North Atlantic more hospitable for hurricanes.

2. Ocean temperatures in the tropical Atlantic are off-the-charts warm for this time of year.

  • They're running three months ahead: Current ocean temperatures are more typical for July.

👀 What we're watching: Hurricane season officially begins June 1. But in recent years, storms have formed in May.

Gov. DeSantis says Florida prepared for what could be the most active hurricane season in history

Hurricane researchers at Colorado State University (CSU) suggest that 2024 could be the most active season yet in the Atlantic Basin. Yet Gov. Ron DeSantis says the state is prepared for hurricane season, even if the experts “don’t know that we prepare” whether a season is active or not.

The Saharan dust coating Europe may actually help weaken hurricanes this season

Western Europe and the Canary Islands have been coated with an inordinate amount of Saharan dust this spring. And though the dust is considered a hindrance, if things go just right, the rust-colored plumes may swing toward the U.S. and help dampen hurricanes during the upcoming “extremely active” hurricane season.

Remembering Hurricane Charley: A Look Back at 2004's Unexpected Impact on North Causeway

On August 14, 2004, Hurricane Charley hit North Causeway in Florida, unexpectedly moving towards the Orlando metropolitan area. Initially forecasted to bring light rain and moderate winds, the hurricane instead intensified and changed direction suddenly, surprising many residents.

ps:I definitely remember Charlie and the other three, all but one of them came right over my Mom's house! She had her knee's done that year so my brother and his wife stay for the first one. My wife and I came down for the second one and had to stay for the third one and my daughter came and stayed with her for the fourth one, but that one was also suppose to come over her house, but went up the west coast of Florida!!

What happens when a hurricane pounds Central Florida? This.

Lying in bed one night during the aftermath of Orlando’s worst modern storm called to mind suffocating in steaming mashed potatoes. There was no AC, no lights and no hope for either.

NOAA predicts ‘highest-ever’ number of named storms in 2024 preseason forecast

Extreme hurricane season
A map of the Atlantic ocean showing sea surface temperature anomalies as of May 7-21, 2024
Data: NOAA; Map: Erin Davis/Axios Visuals

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season will feature an unprecedented cocktail of dangerous air and ocean conditions — and is likely to be extremely active, Axios extreme weather expert Andrew Freedman reports.

  • Why it matters: Hurricanes are nature's largest and most expensive storms. The U.S. government's latest outlook represents its most aggressive prediction ever released in May, just before the season begins.

"This season is looking to be an extraordinary one in a number of ways," NOAA administrator Rick Spinrad said at a press conference today.

🧮 By the numbers: NOAA forecasts the season will bring 85% odds of an above-normal season, with 17–25 named storms of tropical storm intensity or greater.

  • Of those, 8–13 are projected to become hurricanes — and 4–7 major hurricanes of Category 3 or greater.
  • The numbers are well above the 1991–2020 average of 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes each season.

🌀 What to watch: The season will officially start on June 1, with record to near-record warm ocean waters in every part of the Atlantic.

  • Warm water is hurricane fuel. There are few signs that a significant cooldown will occur between now and the heart of the season in August and September.

🖼️ The big picture: Climate change's influence on hurricanes is becoming increasingly clear, according to numerous studies.

Go deeper.

Hot Atlantic: the hurricane region is already reaching August-like water temperatures

The brutal heat of May has felt like August in Florida, with heat index numbers topping highs that you’d normally expect at summer’s peak. The phenomenon is occurring at sea, too, and that’s bad news for hurricane season.

Hurricane season

The US has been rocked by numerous weather disasters this year that have left a staggering price tag, and forecasters say it could get worse this summer. But climate experts say that FEMA, the nation's disaster relief agency, is expected to run out of money before the hurricane season is over. The US has been thrashed with 11 extreme weather disasters with costs exceeding $1 billion so far this year, with a total price tag of $25.1 billion — tied for the second-most such disasters on record. Data now shows the relief fund could slip into the red by the end of summer — a more than $1.3 billion shortfall in August. FEMA told CNN it is continuing to work with Congress "to ensure sufficient funding is available." The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
