Christian Nationalism

Christian Nationalism:  I do not intend to get into political discussion in this forum.  However, Christian Nationalism is the coming buzzword.  I will suggest that regardless of our individual political views it may be important to understand what is meant by that term.   The following article is helpful in that respect.

catholic Europe (small "c" catholic, thus while awkward I did not start with the capital "C") your religion was basically were you were born. Whether one of the Eastern Orthodox or other eastern empire forms of Christianity, or Western or Catholic religion, or Islam with pockets of Jews. As the reformation came, they picked their own territories, so again your religion was where you were born.

America was where some of the smaller subgroups tried to get some territory for their faith. However, in New England Roger Williams came with a novel idea; the concept of religious freedom. Prior to Williams, religious freedom meant the right for you to practice your religion in the territory of your religion. But Williams divorced religion from geography and politics. Apparently William Penn was hoping that Pennsylvania would have been a Quaker state, but found too few Quakers to settle the land, so he took the Roger William's idea of religious freedom. Not sure if Williams affected this, but we even start to see this being a new view of America when Maryland was founded as a Catholic state, but their original settlement had the civic buildings on one side of town, then came the homes, and on the other side of town was the Church.

When Thomas Jefferson became president, people expected him to bring religious persecution and confiscate their Bibles. However, the churches discovered that this separation of church and state, instead of limiting religion, gave the church more freedom than ever before. There was an open market place on religion. People could learn and choose what they found to be the most convincing.

Jefferson/Madison's views of freedom were deepened by the age of Jackson where it was applied to the common people/ well, the common white people. After what happened to his wife, Jackson did not see women as slaves to their assigned place in life, but no matter what your past you can change and become respectable.

Others thinking of Jackson's ideas increased the asking if this should only apply to the common while man and limit women to only respectability. Why not apply this freedom to all people, men and women, all races and creeds. We have been spending the years since trying to reach this goal.

Jefferson/Madison's view of freedom was based in freedom through good laws. In France they had a revolution, but their view of freedom was freedom from all law. They carried over the catholic Europe idea of a land religion, but their religion would be secular humanism. With the reign of terror they came to the idea that freedom was only for the enlightened, and that the common person needed to be forced

Christian Nationalism is an attempt to return to catholic Europe, the Europe that Americans revolted against and set up the country without king or pope. Too many of our liberals are trying to transform the United States into French Revolution Europe. Too many of us have forgotten a little something called the American Revolution.

I support the line in the pledge of Allegiance " One nation, under God" as meaning that there is a limit to my allegiance that the Government refuses to thread upon, that is my conscience. It does not say "under Jesus" or "under the Judio-Christian God" or even "Under Allah" for that matter. An atheist may have his reason be his god. The Nazi pledge was to Hitler. The Communist's pledge is to the party, other pledges are likewise a total submitment to some idea or person or another. Our pledge is to the flag and the republic which carries the Roger Williams, Thomas Jefferson views of liberty of conscience. However, I have sadly heard that Michael Flynn has interpreted the words "Under God" to mean  that we are one nation with one religion. This is very scary, and is the Europe that our founding fathers risked and gave their lives to be free from.

Rachel Maddow did a great piece on Christian Nationalism on her Monday night show last week! If I can find it I will post it.

By the decree enforcing the institution of the papacy in violation of the law of God, our nation will disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan and that the end is near. {5T 451.1}

What Is 'Christian Nationalism'?

It's more than religiosity and patriotism — it's a worldview, writes one political science scholar.

Christian nationalists - wanting to put God into US government

New battle lines are being drawn in the US by a right-wing Christian movement set on what it sees as its divine mission - to spread its beliefs and messages using political power. So what is Christian nationalism and why is it flourishing now?

‘There Is a Real Sense That the Apocalypse Is Coming’

When Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — many of them carrying Christian symbols like crucifixes, statues of the Virgin Mary and even life-sized portraits of Jesus Christ — a terrible thought occurred to Bradley Onishi: “Could I have been there?”

We have forgotten who we are as Americans. Our leaders have had many Christians who protected liberty of conscience and the freedoms that grew out of the thought and effects from practicing these thoughts by Roger Williams, William Penn, Thomas Jefferson/James Madison (the team where their strong and weak points complemented each other) and how these ideas deepened under the age of Jackson. These actually lead to people seeing a widening of these ideas to try to allow everyone to enjoy them; and thus bring it farther than how Jefferson/Madison and Jackson could imagine.

America has been in a fight in the wanting to stop where these men were, and those to bring these principles to every race and women. It's a shame that we have been dragging our feet, but this has been our ideal and we have had many Christian leaders who have been supporting this.

When Al Smith ran for President; since he was a Catholic and because of the role of the Catholic Church in European politics, we were afraid of him and he lost. We were worried that Al Smith would make us a Catholic nation. We wanted to guarantee the separation of Church and State.  When John Kennedy was running he of course faced the same issue. He was able to give a speech showing that he knew the difference between being a Catholic candidate and a candidate for President who happened to worship in the Catholic church. When in office he lived up to his speech maintaining the separation of Church and State.

This has been the practice of our politics over the centuries. Sadly, there were people in the Catholic clergy who have been upset with Catholic politicians who maintained the separation of Church and State, saying that they would not give communion to these politicians. Protestants had been supporting the separation. But today not only are Catholic clergy pushing for Catholics in government to push Catholic ideas; but Protestant leaders have been joining them in a united McGospel that they want to place on the country. The concern that made sure that Al Smith lost; and that Kennedy had to tell us that he understood the issue and would continue to defend the issue despite his denomination, is now no longer a concern. What our forefathers feared we are now embracing.

Joan of Arc was a crusader for freedom. Living where she did in history; she was looking for freedom in working with King and Pope; Church and state. However, they turned against her and her ministry and murdered her. Her devotion to both was unfailing. Her murder shook up Europe. If King and Church could treat someone with both an unblemished life and complete devotion to them; what can King and Church do to the rest of us? This loosened the soil of Europe where a few decades later a monk was able to nail 95 thesis and it take root and sprout. Her murder shook up the world leading to people questioning what happened to her and what can be done about it and this lead to our freedoms through the separation of church and state. We developed a country without king or pope.  We are about to make her martyrdom of no effect.  We want to change our country into the type of country that murdered her. This is burning her afresh.
