Members phkrause Posted June 19, 2024 Members Posted June 19, 2024 ⚖️ Biden's border double trouble President Biden's new immigration policies are facing litigation from both sides of the policy spectrum — the ACLU and Stephen Miller's America First Legal, Axios' Stef W. Kight writes. Why it matters: On border policy, rapid political and legal blowback has become a given. Biden announced a sweeping new program yesterday that would make getting green cards easier for hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who have been in the U.S. for years and are legally married to or the children of citizens. Trump-allied America First Legal pledged legal action. Miller — a longtime Trump adviser, and the group's president — decried the move as "one of the largest executive amnesties in American history." Immigrant rights groups and Democratic lawmakers cheered the move. The other side: Exactly two weeks earlier, Biden sparked furious legal pushback from the left by announcing drastic asylum restrictions. The ACLU has already sued. Members phkrause Posted June 19, 2024 Members Posted June 19, 2024 The Biden administration on Tuesday announced an executive action allowing some undocumented spouses and children of US citizens to apply for lawful permanent residency without leaving the country. The president formally unveiled the action during a White House event marking the 12th anniversary of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. To be eligible for the program, the person must have lived in the US for at least 10 years and be legally married to a US citizen. The application process will open by the end of the summer. In contrast, former President Donald Trump has promised to deport more than 10 million people if he is elected to a second term. Biden says Trump's mass deportation policy would "rip spouses and children from their families, homes and communities and place them in detention camps." Members phkrause Posted June 27, 2024 Members Posted June 27, 2024 Migrant apprehensions at the US-Mexico border have dropped by more than 40% since President Biden announced asylum restrictions three weeks ago, according to the Department of Homeland Security. There are now under 2,400 encounters per day, the department said. Senior administration officials say the measure will be lifted when the daily average drops to less than 1,500 encounters between ports of entry. Under the rules of the sweeping executive order, migrants who cross the US-Mexico border illegally are barred from seeking asylum once a daily threshold is met. And unless they meet certain exceptions, they could be returned to Mexico or their country of origin. Quote phkrause Obstinacy is a barrier to all improvement. - ChL 60

Members phkrause Posted July 11, 2024 Members Posted July 11, 2024 Immigration Voters in eight states will soon decide whether to change their constitutions to explicitly ban voting by noncitizens. The move is part of a multipronged effort by Trump-aligned Republicans to raise the unlikely specter of undocumented immigrants casting ballots in November's elections. It is already illegal for people who aren't US citizens to vote in federal contests, and experts say it rarely happens, given that violators face imprisonment and deportation. Separately, a new Massachusetts policy went into effect Tuesday that bans migrants from sleeping at Boston's Logan International Airport. For months, state officials have warned they were overwhelmed by the number of migrant families arriving and sleeping overnight in the airport's terminals. Members phkrause Posted July 14, 2024 Members Posted July 14, 2024 Immigration Panama has placed barbed wire on several routes along the Darién Gap in a bid to block migrants making their way north. The treacherous 66-mile hike through a mountainous rainforest region connecting South and Central America has seen an increase in the number of migrants willing to risk their lives and safety to cross it. Panamanian figures show more than 170,000 migrants crossed the route from January to June 6 of this year. Some high-ranking officials in neighboring Colombia have criticized Panama's latest move. "The barbed wires in the jungle will only bring drowned people into the sea. Migration is stopped by removing economic blockades and improving the economy of the south," Colombia's President Gustavo Petro said. Members phkrause Posted July 21, 2024 Members Posted July 21, 2024 📉 Americans sour on immigration Data: Gallup. Chart: Axios Visuals 55% of U.S. adults want to see immigration levels reduced, Axios' Sareen Habeshian writes from a Gallup poll out this month. Why it matters: It's the first time in nearly two decades that a majority of Americans have wanted less immigration. 🧮 By the numbers: The share of U.S. adults who said they would like to see less immigration jumped from 41% to 55% in a year. The attitude shift comes as border crossings broke new records late last year. There's been a 15-point increase in the view among Republicans (to 88%), an 11-point increase among independents (to 50%) and a 10-point increase among Democrats (to 28%). Why this matters: Some of the members of the group said they hoped to make it to the U.S. border before elections are held in November, because they fear that if Donald Trump wins, he will follow through on a promise to close the border to asylum-seekers. Migrants trying to pass through Mexico in recent years have organized large groups to try to reduce the risk of being attacked by gangs or stopped by Mexican immigration officials as they travel. Members phkrause Posted July 31, 2024 Members Posted July 31, 2024 Immigration Vice President Kamala Harris went on the offensive on immigration at her rally in Atlanta Tuesday, attempting to counter former President Donald Trump's attacks on the issue. She touted her role as a California attorney general who prosecuted transnational gangs, drug cartels and human traffickers — then blamed Trump for "tanking" the bipartisan immigration deal that included some of the toughest border security measures in recent memory. Meanwhile, the Trump team recently released two campaign ads taking direct aim at Harris' immigration portfolio and falsely casting her as President Joe Biden's "border czar." Biden administration officials have repeatedly maintained that Harris focused on long-term fixes, while the Department of Homeland Security remained responsible for overseeing border security. Members phkrause Posted August 14, 2024 Members Posted August 14, 2024 Migration has become one of Harris' biggest political liabilities President Joe Biden, watching tens of thousands of migrants from Central America reach the U.S.-Mexico border just a few months into his administration, tapped his second-in-command to help address the influx — a decision that has exposed Vice President Kamala Harris to one of her biggest political liabilities. Read more. Why this matters: In grappling with migration, Harris proceeded cautiously. She focused her time and prestige on boosting private investment in the so-called Northern Triangle – El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. Her goal was to help create jobs to bolster economies and dissuade migrants from making the perilous journey to the United States. It was a decidedly long-term — and limited — approach to a humanitarian crisis. While migration from the Northern Triangle ebbed, it surged from other nations, sparking an emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border that Republicans have aggressively sought to exploit at Harris’ expense. Immigration has long been an issue that motivates Trump’s base of supporters, and polls show it is among the most important issues on the minds of voters. While in office, Trump sought to restrict asylum with moves that were challenged in the courts. This time around, Trump has promised to oversee the “mass deportation” of migrants who have committed crimes in the United States. Members phkrause Posted August 18, 2024 Members Posted August 18, 2024 MAGA’s immigrant enforcer Bernie Moreno gives a stump speech in Lorain County. Photo: Stef Kight/Axios WILMINGTON, Ohio — Colombian-born Bernie Moreno came to the U.S. at age 5. Now the Ohio GOP Senate nominee wants legal immigrants like himself to learn English and be blocked from government benefits for their first 10 years in the U.S., Axios' Stef Kight reports. Why it matters: The most expensive congressional race this fall stars an immigrant who could deliver a Senate GOP majority — while boosting party efforts to pass harsher immigration laws. Moreno's opponent is Ohio's last statewide elected Democrat, Sen. Sherrod Brown, the powerful Banking chairman who retains a 5-point lead in the RealClearPolitics average of polls. It's one of just three toss-up Senate races in Cook Political Report rankings (along with Montana and an open seat in Michigan). Moreno is trying to tap into voters' concerns about migrants and fentanyl coming across the border, issues that could help determine which party controls the Senate in 2025. 🔭 Zoom out: Taking their cues from Trump, Republicans have embraced increasingly strict stances on immigration and drug trafficking. "We're not going to give you the citizenship test in any other language but English," Moreno, 57, told Axios in an exclusive interview. Immigration was central to Moreno's pitch to voters at nearly every campaign stop the GOP candidate made as Axios shadowed him for two days of a week-long bus tour. "They learn the language, like I did. They assimilate, like I did. They understand the culture, like I did," he told supporters at a local coffee shop in Wilmington, about 50 miles northwest of Cincinnati. "And when they're ready, they raise their hand and swear allegiance to the United States of America, like I did when I was 18 years old." Moreno wants to bar people from asylum — for life — if they illegally cross the U.S. border or do not first apply for protection in a country they traveled through. Even if they follow those rules, he'd want to force migrants to wait outside the U.S. until their asylum cases are decided. Quote phkrause Obstinacy is a barrier to all improvement. - ChL 60
Members phkrause Posted August 21, 2024 Members Posted August 21, 2024 How Abbott made the border a top priority Illustration: Brendan Lynch/Axios Gov. Greg Abbott's strategy of busing migrants to Democratic-led cities has turned immigration into a top national issue, political strategists say. Why it matters: Abbott is helping reshape migration policies across the U.S. ahead of the presidential election. The big picture: From April 2022 through mid-June 2024, the governor sent nearly 120,000 migrants to six cities, costing Texas taxpayers more than $230 million, the New York Times reported. Cities like Chicago and Denver have especially felt the pinch. Abbott's busing effort pushed Denver officials to weigh difficult decisions about how to use limited resources and call for federal assistance. Context: There were nearly 236,000 migrant encounters at the border when Abbott began busing migrants in April 2022, per U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Encounters reached a high of nearly 302,000 in December and fell to about 104,000 in July, after Biden halted asylum processing at the U.S.-Mexico border. What they're saying: "Texas alone shouldn't be bearing the full brunt of the Biden-Harris border crisis, and now that the migrant crisis is at their doorstep, sanctuary city leaders have completely changed their tune," Abbott spokesperson Andrew Mahaleris tells Axios. The intrigue: Denver began sending immigrants to Republican-controlled Utah after Texas officials bused them to Denver. Reality check: Cities like Chicago and Denver were likely to see some increase in migrants last year regardless of Abbott's actions. The number of border crossings spiked in 2023, and those cities are often destinations for immigrants. The drop in the number of migrants at the border this year means Abbott has sent fewer buses, NBC reported. Members phkrause Posted August 23, 2024 Members Posted August 23, 2024 The US expands areas in Mexico for migrants to apply online for entry at its southern border Mexico has been asking the U.S. to expand access to CBP One, the government’s app to apply for asylum appointments, to its southernmost states in an attempt to relieve the pressure migrants feel to travel north to at least Mexico City. Previously, they had to be in central or northern Mexico to apply. Read more. Why this matters: Mexico hopes that if migrants can wait for their appointments in the south, they might not risk getting snagged by authorities without papers or by organized crime groups that prey on migrants continuing north. With an appointment, they could, in theory, move without interference. When the Biden administration temporarily suspended the asylum process last June, the CBP One app became one of the only ways to request asylum. There is, however, still pressure to get farther north. Migrants often carry big debts and need to start paying them off as soon as possible. Many have heard the chances of finding jobs are higher in central and northern Mexico, and money is needed for what could be a monthslong wait for an appointment. For groups that advocate for migrants and human rights, there is little to celebrate. In an open letter to the Mexican government, they called CBP One “a violation of international law” because it allows the U.S. to limit access to its territory for people in need of protection. They argue that many migrants wind up waiting in full shelters or camping in unsanitary conditions for months, and are vulnerable to kidnapping, sexual assaults, torture and extortion by criminals and authorities.
