Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted October 14, 2022 Moderators Posted October 14, 2022 Daylight Savings Time: On November 6, most people in the U.S. will turn their clocks back one hour. There is a growing move in the U.S. to make time standard throughout the U.S., with no changes twice a year as happens now. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted October 28, 2022 Author Moderators Posted October 28, 2022 My understanding, which could be wrong, is that some States have voted one way or the other, subject to it passing nationally, but the required number of states have not uniformly voted. phkrause 1 Quote Gregory
Members phkrause Posted November 3, 2023 Members Posted November 3, 2023 Ugh, time to "fall back" Illustration: Aïda Amer/Axios Daylight saving time ends Sunday. Although nobody seems to like the annual cycle of "springing forward" and "falling back," there's no consensus on a better way. In one corner: Several GOP lawmakers, including Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), want to make daylight saving time — the one with the later sunrise and sunset — permanent. Congress actually did that in the 1970s — but then changed it back, Axios' Kelly Tyko reports. In the other corner: Some scientists want to make daylight standard time — the one with the earlier sunrises and sunsets — permanent. They say it's better aligned with our circadian rhythms, Axios' Carly Mallenbaum writes. Keep reading. Quote phkrause Read Isaiah 10:1-13

UP FIRST Melissa Blackhair speaks of daylight savings time in her home in Tuba City, Ariz. (AP Photo/Matt York) As the US springs forward to daylight saving, it's a time of confusion for Navajo and Hopi tribes As most of America moves forward into daylight saving time, those who live on the Arizona portion of the Navajo Nation endure mind-bending calculations every March through November. The largest Native American reservation in the U.S., the Navajo Nation reset their clocks for one hour later despite being situated between two territories that remain on standard time: the rest of Arizona and the neighboring Hopi reservation. Map: Alex Fitzpatrick/Axios As another daylight saving time draws to an end early tomorrow, nearly half of U.S. states have taken steps toward permanent DST, Axios' Alex Fitzpatrick reports. Lawmakers or voters in 20 states have approved some form of permanent daylight saving time, according to a tally by the National Conference of State Legislatures. (Huge) reality check: States can only adopt permanent DST with an act of Congress. So these measures are effectively moot absent federal action. Keep reading. Quote phkrause Read Isaiah 10:1-13

Members phkrause Posted March 8 Members Posted March 8 Your daylight saving time hacks Illustration: Shoshana Gordon/Axios Most of America will lose an hour early Sunday as we "spring forward" for daylight saving time. Why it matters: It's not just losing one hour of sleep for one night — the downstream effects of the time change can harm your health. But there are steps you can take to prepare your body. 🌅 Zoom in: The brain has a master clock that's set by exposure to sunlight and darkness, AP reports. Morning light resets the rhythm. By evening, levels of a hormone called melatonin begin to surge, triggering drowsiness. Too much light in the evening — that extra hour from daylight saving time — delays that surge, and the cycle gets out of sync. Plus the circadian clock affects more than sleep: It also influences heart rate, blood pressure, stress hormones and metabolism. That's why sleep experts wish we'd stick with standard time. Case in point: Right after the clocks shift in March, there's a "spike in workplace accidents, road accidents and medical errors due to sleep deprivation and cognitive impairment," James Rowley of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine told Axios' Carly Mallenbaum last year. 🧮 By the numbers: Daylight saving time, with later sunsets, has long been popular among Americans. Lawmakers have tried to make it permanent. But the tide is changing: 54% of Americans say they aren't in favor of daylight saving time and would prefer standard time year-round, according to Gallup polling out this week. Compare that with 1990, when just 21% said they didn't support daylight saving time. But as long as we've got the time change, here are our top tips to prepare for the shift, which you can start tonight: 🍲 Gradually adjust bedtimes and daily activities — like mealtimes or exercise routines — to 15-20 minutes earlier, starting a few nights before the clocks switch. This is especially important if you have kids or pets. 🌃 Set the clock ahead one hour Saturday night, then go to bed at your "normal" time, to get ahead of the change. ☀️ Go outside in the early morning during the week of the time change to help adjust your internal clock.
