By the decree enforcing the institution of the papacy in violation of the law of God, our nation will disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan and that the end is near. {5T 451.1}

📈 Prices creep back up
mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgraphics.axios.co
Data: FRED; Chart: Axios Visuals

Beating inflation might be harder than it looked just a few weeks ago, Axios Macro co-author Courtney Brown reports.

Driving the news: New inflation data released today showed that prices jumped last month by the highest rate in a year.

  • Consumer spending fell at the same time, and Americans' disposable income was flat after accounting for inflation.

🔮 The big question is what this could mean for the Fed's plans to lower interest rates later this year. A rate cut next month was already off the table.

🎩 "Exclusivity economy" booms

One of the fastest-growing areas of the economy is clubs selling exclusivity — persuading the very rich that behind certain politely-guarded doors lies an expanse of grass that's especially green, Axios' Felix Salmon writes.

  • 💰Case in point: While the price of concert tickets has soared in recent years, inflation in VIP tickets has been off the charts, with premium Taylor Swift tickets changing hands for upwards of $50,000 each.

Exclusive clubs are "sort of the industry du jour," Jennie Enterprise, the founder of the Core Club in Manhattan, told the Financial Times.

  • New York and London are seeing a rash of members' clubs opening up.
  • Pop-up events also drive millions of dollars in revenue from individuals wanting to be in glamorous places.

Between the lines: Part of the appeal is knowing most people can't join the club.

🍽️ In New York, "house accounts" are back, Bloomberg reports:

A throwback to a Mad Men world of dining, house accounts confer a personal credit line upon the holder along with VIP status. In addition to being able to flex with a smooth, bold "Just put it on my tab" nod, such diners will be granted insider perks.

Soaring food prices have taken a serious bite out of consumer spending, but bananas have consistently bucked the trend, Axios' Deena Zaidi writes.

  • Bananas have never exceeded $1 per pound. At Trader Joe's, they've been 19 cents apiece for two decades.

🖼 The big picture: Favorable growing conditions, low labor costs, efficient shipping and distribution system, free trade agreements and massive plantations have insulated bananas from soaring prices.

  • And they're good for you!

📈 Behind the scenes: Bidenworld's big gauge

For some Biden advisers, the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey — which drops at 10 am ET today — is becoming perhaps the most important economic reading of the month, Axios' Hans Nichols reports.

  • Why it matters: For President Biden to win reelection, voters need to feel the economy is as good as Wall Street and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen insist it is.

Over the past three months, the Michigan reading — along with the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) — have brought into focus something the White House has been squinting to see: a happy, healthy consumer.

  • We'll have today's number in Axios PM!

📈 S&P, NASDAQ break records
mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.axios.com%

Both the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ stock market indexes closed at record highs yesterday.

  • It was the S&P 500's 15th record close of 2024 and the tech-heavy NASDAQ's second record in two days, MarketWatch notes.

🥊 Reality check: Even AI is unlikely to drive a repeat of the past decade's performance, The Economist's new cover story warns:

  • "Under realistic assumptions about what will happen to valuations, interest and taxes, to generate even modest real equity returns of 4% a year over the next decade, America's firms would need to increase their underlying profits by around 6% a year, close to their best ever post-war performance. No wonder Warren Buffett ... sees 'no possibility' of super returns for his fund."

Consumer spending retreats

Illustration: Tiffany Herring/Axios

Consumers aren't spending like they used to — threatening a critical factor that's helped keep the economy strong, Axios Macro co-author Courtenay Brown writes.

🛒 Why it matters: Seemingly unstoppable consumer spending has powered overall economic growth for the last three years. But there are signs it can't be counted on in 2024.

📉 By the numbers: The Commerce Department said the decline in retail sales in January was even bigger than it initially seemed — the fourth straight month with a negative revision to earlier months' data.

  • February showed a slight rebound in retail sales, but that was driven largely by higher gas prices.

🔮 Other indicators also hint that the consumer is losing momentum.

  • Bank of America economists said this week that spending growth among lower- and middle-income households is weakening after "being a point of strength during 2023."
  • Delinquencies on credit card and auto loans have ticked up in recent months as well, according to New York Fed data.

Go deeper.

🕶️ As good as it gets
mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgraphics.axios.co
Data: Bureau of Labor Statistics. Chart: Axios Visuals

If you went into a lab and tried to design the perfect jobs report, you'd have a hard time coming up with something better than the one the Labor Department issued yesterday.

  • Why it matters: The U.S. labor market isn't merely not faltering. Rather, it's getting stronger — but in ways that aren't likely to raise excessive inflation alarm bells at the Federal Reserve, Axios chief economic correspondent Neil Irwin writes.

Strong job creation in March coincided with an expanding labor force and moderate wage growth — pretty much an ideal situation for both workers and inflation-wary central bankers and investors.

  • Employers added 303,000 jobs in March, the strongest in 10 months. January and February figures were revised upwards, affirming that the recent run of strong job growth is no statistical mirage.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate dipped to 3.8% from 3.9%, remaining below 4% for the 26th straight month.

Higher gas and rents keep US inflation elevated, likely delaying Fed rate cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumer inflation remained persistently high last month, boosted by gas, rents, auto insurance and other items, the government said Wednesday in a report that will likely give pause to the Federal Reserve as it considers how often — or even whether — to cut interest rates this year.

Biden's inflation bad news

Inflation is rearing its ugly head again, and it's a nightmare for Biden on several fronts.

Why it matters: For voters, it will translate into higher borrowing costs for longer — and closer to Election Day, Axios' Hans Nichols reports.

Zoom in: The Consumer Price Index rose 0.4% in March, forcing Biden to acknowledge the Fed isn't likely to cut rates at its next meeting.

  • "This may delay it a month or so, I'm not sure of that. We don't know what the Fed is going to do for certain," Biden said, when he was asked about it during his press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
  • Biden reaffirmed his prediction, made last month, that the Fed will cut rates before the end of the year.

The bottom line: The CPI number wasn't good news for the White House, but it's just one monthly report.

  • As readers of Axios Macro know, the Fed actually looks more closely at a separate inflation gauge — the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, or PCE, which is out tomorrow — when it makes its interest rate decisions.

🤑 D-FW inflation higher than national average

mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgraphics.axios.co
Data: BLS; Chart: Axios Visuals

Inflation in Dallas-Fort Worth remains higher than the national average but is still well below heights seen in 2022, per the latest Consumer Price Index report.

Why it matters: Consumers continue to see high prices, especially for food and shelter.

  • Inflation was falling at the end of last year, but it has remained higher than palatable for the first part of the year, likely putting at risk the Federal Reserve's plans to lower interest rates.

Zoom out: Nationally, consumers are paying 3.5% more for goods and services compared to last year.

By the numbers: D-FW inflation in March was up 4.9% from a year ago, per the CPI report out yesterday.

  • Local housing costs are up 6.2% over last year.
  • D-FW food costs are up 3.7% compared to last year, with dining out costs driving the hike with a 6% annual increase.

The intrigue: Texas and D-FW gas prices remain below the national average, but the CPI fuels and utilities category saw one of the biggest annual jumps in the Dallas metro at 9.2%.

  • Piped gas utility prices are up almost 21% since last year.

Flashback: In October 2022, inflation in D-FW was at 9.2%. Though the cost of goods was straining consumers' wallets, local and state budgets saw a surplus from increased sales tax revenue.

What's next: The CME FedWatch tool now sees an 80% chance that rates stay at current levels at the Fed's June policy meeting.

  • Last week, the tool had 62% odds of rate cuts.

💰 Biden's new inflation line

The White House is rolling out its latest response to high inflation: It'd be much worse if former President Trump wins.

  • Why it matters: President Biden knows that inflation has given voters bad vibes — and that there's not a lot they can do to lower it before November, Axios' Hans Nichols reports.

🥊 So they're turning to a new line of attack: warning voters inflation could climb higher if Trump imposes new tariffs and gives more tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans.

  • "MAGAnomics is inflation-feeding welfare for the rich," White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates writes in a memo to Biden allies, out this morning.
  • "Not only will Bidenomics lower costs even more, but it will also attack inflation by undoing tax giveaways for rich special interests."

The other side: In reply, the Trump campaign pointed to a tweet by senior adviser Jason Miller saying that with Biden, it's "always someone else's fault."

😠 Shoppers get fussier

The collision of inflation and pandemic-era trends has changed the way we shop.

  • Zoom in: Customers are frustrated by sky-high prices and accustomed to pandemic perks like at-home delivery, curbside pick-up and quick, remote appointments, according to Gallup polling of workers in retail, health care and beyond.

🛒 By the numbers: 43% of workers said post-pandemic customers are more demanding.

  • 28% said they expect remote service.
  • 11% said their interactions with customers are more emotional these days.

“Consumers feel like they are spending more money on things, and the expectation is almost that they will receive better service as compensation,” Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, tells Axios.

  • “All of this means retail staff have a much harder time keeping up with what customers want, especially in cases where labor hours or staffing numbers have been cut."

Emergency rooms refused to treat pregnant women, leaving one to miscarry in a lobby restroom

WASHINGTON (AP) — One woman miscarried in the lobby restroom of a Texas emergency room as front desk staff refused to check her in. Another woman learned that her fetus had no heartbeat at a Florida hospital, the day after a security guard turned her away from the facility. And in North Carolina, a woman gave birth in a car after an emergency room couldn’t offer an ultrasound. The baby later died.

Trouble for rate cuts

Data: Bureau of Economic Analysis; Chart: Axios Visuals

The most troubling part of today's disappointing GDP report might be what it says about inflation, Axios Macro co-authors Neil Irwin and Courtenay Brown report.

  • Why it matters: The possibility of an interest rate cut this year "is starting to look increasingly more out of reach" if "growth continues to slowly decelerate, but inflation strongly takes off again in the wrong direction," said Olu Sonola, Fitch's head of US economic research, in a note.
