A polar bear in Alaska, a dolphin in Florida, red foxes in Europe and a wide range of other wild animals have been infected with the flu virus strain currently spreading in dairy cattle in the U.S.

  • Why it matters: Up to 75% of new and emerging infectious diseases in people come from animals, and most of those can be traced back to wildlife, Axios' Alison Snyder writes.

Covid-19 vaccines

Another new version of the Covid-19 vaccine will likely be coming this fall. A group of FDA vaccine advisers voted unanimously on Wednesday to recommend that the agency tell vaccine manufacturers to update the Covid-19 shots so they will be more effective against the JN.1 lineage of the coronavirus. JN.1 and its descendants KP.2 and KP.3 are the versions of the virus that are most common in the US right now, according to the CDC. The FDA told the advisory committee Wednesday that studies have shown that currently available Covid-19 vaccines appear to be less effective against the variants that are now in circulation.

Bird flu

Five cases of bird flu have been identified among workers culling poultry at a farm in northeast Colorado, according to state health officials. The commercial egg operation was impacted by H5N1 outbreaks that have also affected wild birds and dairy cows in several states. Since the first cattle infections were reported in late March, 157 herds have tested positive for H5N1 across 13 states. Four states have had more than 20 herds impacted — Texas, Idaho, Colorado and Michigan — according to the Department of Agriculture. But on Friday, the CDC said its risk assessment for the general public remains low.

Flu virus

The CDC announced a $5 million initiative to offer seasonal flu vaccines to farmworkers to prevent a supercharged flu virus. Public health officials across the US share concerns that a new version of the influenza virus could emerge among livestock workers who are at a higher risk of catching the bird flu virus, which has been circulating in millions of farmed and wild animals. Under the new initiative, the seasonal flu vaccine will not be mandatory for farmworkers but will be brought to local events and to areas where they typically gather. The general public's risk from bird flu remains low, according to the CDC, but there is still a real risk for animals, with outbreaks detected in commercial poultry, backyard flocks and even pets.

A bird flu outbreak is spreading among cows in the US. Scientists are hunting for answers

AMES, Iowa (AP) — At first glance, it looks like an unassuming farm. Cows are scattered across fenced-in fields. A milking barn sits in the distance with a tractor parked alongside. But the people who work there are not farmers, and other buildings look more like what you’d find at a modern university than in a cow pasture.

💉 Mapped: Childhood vaccine dropoff

Choropleth map of U.S. states showing the estimated share of kindergartners with vaccine exemptions in the 2022-2023 school year. States on the West Coast (apart from California) have a higher exemption rate than the rest of the country. In Idaho, 12.1% of kindergartners requested exemptions, compared to 3.3% nationally.
Data: CDC. Map: Axios Visuals

A measles outbreak in Oregon is refocusing attention on declining childhood vaccination rates as kids head back to school, Axios' Tina Reed writes.

  • Why it matters: Lingering vaccine hesitancy from the pandemic is evident in pediatricians' offices as more parents opt out of the shots for measles, chicken pox, and whooping cough, among others, using non-medical religious exemptions.

While official data lags by several months, public health experts told Axios that anecdotal reports suggest rates continue to fall, leaving the population more vulnerable to outbreaks.

  • U.S. parents still overwhelmingly support childhood vaccinations. But kindergarten exemptions rose to a median of 3% nationally during the 2022-2023 school year, up from 2.7% the year before.

🔬 Between the lines: A Gallup Poll this month found 69% of respondents view childhood vaccines as "extremely" or "very" important, down from 94% in 2001.

  • Gallup attributed the dropoff to people who lean Republican, noting the percentage of that cohort saying childhood vaccinations were "extremely important" stood at 26% this year, compared to 62% in 2001.

West Nile virus

Two deaths from West Nile virus have been reported in Wisconsin and one in Illinois — the first such deaths in those states this year, according to the state health departments. The CDC said Thursday that it has received reports of 18 deaths from West Nile across the country so far this year, according to preliminary data. Overall, the CDC has received 289 reports of West Nile cases in 33 states this year. Of those cases, 195 have been neuroinvasive, in which the virus invades the brain and nervous system. This can lead to complications such as brain swelling, brain damage or death. There is no vaccine or specific treatment for West Nile, which is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes.
