Members phkrause
AI fuels S.F. comeback Illustration: Annelise Capossela/Axios Demand for office space in San Francisco is rising — offering hope that a recovery is brewing for the depressed downtown of tech's global capital, Axios' Ryan Heath reports. Why it matters: "San Francisco is writing the playbook for being a new type of knowledge center" — along with Boston, Seattle and D.C. — according to Katy Redmond, a managing director at commercial real estate company JLL. 🖼️ The big picture: For Bay Area optimists, it's the start of a boom. But pessimists aren't ready to abandon their picture of San Francisco as a grim, "post-apocalyptic" city, as Elon Musk put it. Crime is such a worry that the front page of Sunday's S.F. Chronicle had a story asserting that the city is "far from doomed." What's happening: San Francisco is now a teeming center of AI development — home to 20 of the 50 members of Forbes AI 50 list showcasing promising companies in the field. Office searches — a quarter of them by AI companies — are reaching levels not seen since COVID vaccines became available in 2021, according to JLL. Many AI startups believe their work is "best done in person," Redmond, the JLL executive, told Axios. Commercial real-estate companies are betting that in-person attendance requirements from South Bay-located companies such as Google and Meta will also trigger San Francisco-based companies to follow suit. 🔬 Zoom in: Many smaller AI startups are located away from the city's downtown heart, including in Hayes Valley (recently dubbed "Cerebral Valley") and the Mission District — where OpenAI is based. 🥊 Reality check: Most AI firms lack the scale to fill blocks of empty downtown skyscraper floors. Even super-hot OpenAI only recently topped 1,000 staff. One of the biggest, Databricks, has around 5,500 employees. 25 million square feet of office space is vacant in the city — 28% of the total, including 9 million square feet that tenants are looking to sublease, according to commercial real-estate experts CBRE. Vacancies ran 35% of inventory last month in the South of Market, Mid-Market and Mission Bay/China Basin neighborhoods, JLL reports. Members phkrause
"Nutrition labels" aim to boost AI trust Twilio's "nutrition labels" show how data will be used for AI training. Image: Twilio As adoption of generative AI grows, providers hope that greater visibility about how they do and don't use customers' data will increase those clients' trust in the technology, Axios chief tech correspondent Ina Fried reports. Why it matters: There's a mad scramble in the software world to add AI features. But worries about privacy and security are prompting some businesses to discourage employees from using the new features. Twilio, which helps businesses automate communications with their customers, will place "nutrition labels" on the AI services it offers those businesses, clearly outlining how their data will be used. The labels report what AI models Twilio is using, whether those models are being trained on customer data, whether features are optional and whether there is a "human in the loop." A "privacy ladder" distinguishes between company data that is used only for customers' internal projects — and data that is also being used to train models used by other customers, as well as whether personally identifiable information is included in the data. Salesforce unveiled an acceptable use policy that governs what companies can and can't do with its generative AI technologies. Among the practices banned are using the technology to generate weapons, pornography or political campaigns. Salesforce prohibits using AI to offer individualized advice that would normally require a licensed professional, such as a lawyer or financial adviser. Salesforce customers must also disclose when people are interacting directly with a bot, and are forbidden from providing AI-generated content to users under the pretense that it is human-made. 🔮 What's next: Twilio and Salesforce both said they hope other firms will follow their lead. Members phkrause
AI could choke on its own exhaust Illustration: Sarah Grillo/Axios The internet is beginning to fill up with more and more content generated by artificial intelligence rather than human beings. Why it matters: That brings weird new dangers to society — and the AI programs themselves, Axios' Ina Fried and Scott Rosenberg write. What's happening: Experts estimate AI-generated content could account for as much as 90% of information on the internet in just a few years, as ChatGPT, Dall-E and other programs spill torrents of verbiage and images. But the world hasn't yet figured out how to label AI-generated output reliably, and differentiate it from human-created content. The danger to society is the now-familiar problem of information overload and degradation. AI turbocharges the ability to create mountains of new content — while undermining the ability to check that material for reliability. It recycles biases and errors in the data that was used to train it. The danger to AI itself is newer and stranger: Research papers have introduced a novel lexicon of potential AI disorders. "Model collapse" is researchers' name for what happens to generative AI models — including OpenAI's GPT-3 and GPT-4 — when they're trained using data produced by other AIs rather than human beings. Feed a model enough of this "synthetic" data, and the quality of the AI's answers can rapidly deteriorate, as the systems lock in on the most probable word choices and discard the "tail" choices that keep their output interesting. "Model Autophagy Disorder," or MAD, is what researchers at Rice and Stanford dubbed the result of AI consuming its own products. How transformers work — Financial Times (no paywall!): Transformers is the name a team of Google researchers gave in 2017 to their new approach to neural network design, which kicked off today's AI revolution. The FT's visualization walks through simple examples of how transformers work. Word count: 3,000. Math required: minimal. 2. Go deeper into large language models — Ars Technica: Each time you ask ChatGPT or any other LLM a question, it performs an enormous number of calculations in order to, finally, type some words back to you. This lays out how these "word vectors" operate. If you're only going to read one AI explainer, this is the best. Word count: 6,000. Math required: modest. 3. Mathematician's perspective, for the rest of us — Stephen Wolfram: AI programs work by translating everything they touch into numbers. The latest generative AI programs do this on an unfathomably large scale — with billions of words needed to train them. Word count: 18,000. Math required: considerable — but it's understandable even if you never took calculus. Why it matters: As AI seeps into medicine, news, politics and business, human psychology gives the technology's creators levers to enhance users' experiences — or manipulate them, Axios managing editor Alison Snyder writes. Case in point: In one new study, participants who were about to interact with a mental-health chatbot were told the bot was "caring," "manipulative" or neither. After using the same chatbot, most people primed to believe the AI was "caring" said it was. Participants who'd been told the AI had no motives said it didn't. Just 24% of the participants who were told the AI was trying to manipulate them into buying its service said they perceived it as malicious. Chart: Axios Visuals The rise of cheap, easy-to-use generative AI tools and — plus the lack of legal guardrails — is setting up a perfect misinformation storm in the big elections year of 2024, Axios global tech correspondent Ryan Heath writes. X, which in its former incarnation as Twitter was the go-to platform for breaking news developments, has been flooded with misinformation since the Hamas attack on Israel. X users were presented with false information ranging from video game footage and fireworks footage passed off as deadly attacks, to fake pictures of soccer superstar Ronaldo holding the Palestinian flag, Wired reported. 🖼️ The big picture: India, the U.S. and Indonesia — the world's three biggest democracies — will hold national elections in 2024, alongside the 27-country European Parliament. Nations at geopolitical flashpoints — including Ukraine, Taiwan and South Korea — will also hold elections. Israel, which has held five elections since 2019, could head back to the polls. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), who co-led a bipartisan investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election, told Axios that Russia's actions were "child's play, compared to what either domestic or foreign AI tools could do to completely screw up our elections." Axios global tech correspondent Ryan Heath has this dispatch from his home base in Manhattan: New York-based tech firms and investors see the advent of AI as the latest opportunity to try to unseat the Bay Area as tech's global capital. Why it matters: The generative AI industry needs to win adoption in key industries concentrated in New York — finance, media, law and medicine. What's happening: New York becomes an AI showcase next week as the city hosts a Tech Week with 370 events, coordinated by Andreessen Horowitz. From AI speed dating to Latino startup mixers, the events aim to plant tech community roots in a city teeming with other interests and distractions. 🖼️ The big picture: A growing number of tech companies are opening and expanding offices and hosting major events in New York. In the past month, New York became an AI showcase: Microsoft debuted its full Copilot product, Google delivered its annual Made By Google hardware event and LinkedIn presented its AI vision. Dropbox, Asana, Zendesk and Cockroach Labs held major events. Amazon plans a New York revival — expanding into an iconic 600,000-square-foot Fifth Avenue building. 💬 Spencer Kimball, CEO of New York-based Cockroach Labs, said: "I think the energy in Manhattan post-pandemic exceeds San Francisco, especially with younger people." Daire Hickey, managing partner at 150Bond and a co-founder of Web Summit, said he used to go to the Bay Area six to 10 times a year, out of necessity. "Now SF visits NYC," he said. 🥊 Reality check: In Silicon Valley, every week is tech week. The Bay Area remains far ahead of New York as a hub for tech employment, startups and investment. As the pandemic fed an exodus out of the Bay Area, New York isn't the only region to benefit: Austin, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver also have seen AI booms.
