LIMA, (Reuters) -A powerful earthquake of magnitude of 7.0 struck near the coast in southern Peru's Arequipa region on Friday, local officials said, adding no deaths had been reported.

A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of southern Peru overnight at a depth of 17 miles, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake hit 5 miles west of Atiquipa, around 370 miles south of the capital Lima. No deaths have been reported, although crews are still assessing the quake's impact on communities and the infrastructure, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen said. Peru, and most of the South American Pacific Coast, are on the border of two tectonic plates: the South American plate, which includes most of the continent, and the Nazca plate, which extends across the Pacific along most of the coast.

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake occurred in Los Angeles at 12:20 p.m. PT on Monday, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake startled residents, rattled schools and interrupted several live and recorded shows. Monday's shaking prompted the Los Angeles Fire Department to go into earthquake mode, with crews at 106 fire stations doing surveys of their districts. There were no reports of injuries or structural damage, the department said. Separately, much of western Japan is on high alert after a 7.1-magnitude quake hit the region last week. The government has lifted most advisories but many residents and officials are preparing for a potential emergency during what is normally peak travel season during summer holidays.

A quake that strong is relatively rare, with officials reporting only about 15 around the world each year. The quake was also the 12th strongest earthquake recorded in the state since 1906. At least 95 people have been killed after a powerful earthquake struck a remote region of Tibet today, with tremors felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of northern India. The 7.1-magnitude quake and multiple aftershocks toppled houses in remote Himalayan villages, rocked a nearby Tibetan holy city and rattled visitors to a Mount Everest base camp. Its epicenter, located in Tingri County high on the Tibetan plateau, was close to the border with Nepal, around 50 miles north of the world's highest mountain.
