🇫🇷 Look ahead to Paris 2024

Paris will mark a "return to normal" after two Olympic Games — Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 — were overshadowed by COVID, Molly Solomon, president of NBC Olympics Production told Axios on stage today at the Cannes Lions Festival on the French Riviera.

Here's what to expect:

  • The opening ceremony will include "athletes floating down [the Seine River] in boats," she said.
  • Paris is only six hours ahead of Eastern time. So that means many of the biggest events will be shown live from 2 to 5 p.m. ET.

Olympics: Host City Contract Requires Human Rights

(New York) – The move by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to incorporate human rights principles in its Host City Contract could help prevent major abuses by future Olympic hosts, the Sport and Rights Alliance (SRA) said today. The revised Host City Contract, developed with recommendations from a coalition of leading rights, transparency, and athletes’ organizations, was finalized in January 2017 and will first apply to the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The Economics of Hosting the Olympic Games

The costs of hosting the Olympics have skyrocketed, while the economic benefits are far from clear. This has led to fewer states interested in playing host and a search for options to lighten the burdens of staging the big event.

On this day next year, 10,500 Summer Olympics athletes will parade in boats along the Seine in Paris in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators.

  • Why it matters: It'll be the first time in history that an opening ceremony hasn't been held in a stadium, according to the official Olympics site.

Boats for each national delegation will be equipped with cameras to allow viewers watching on TV and online to get a close-up view of all the action.

📸 Parting shot

Simone Biles celebrates with her coach, Laurent Landi, after competing on the vault in the U.S. Classic yesterday.

  • She's back. It was Biles' first time competing since she withdrew from the Olympic final in Tokyo two years ago — and she won by a large margin.

"Oh, and yes: She finished the competition with a Yurchenko double pike, a vault not contemplated, much less competed, before Biles introduced it in 2021," The New York Times' Maggie Astor writes.

  • Biles has not yet said whether she plans to compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Bethesda fencer Tatiana Nazlymov is making her Olympic debut next month.

Why it matters: The 19-year-old Princeton student is among a handful of people with DMV ties headed to Paris for the summer games.

Zoom in: Nazlymov, who went to Georgetown Day School, picked up the sport at age 9 and grew up fencing at her family's club in Bethesda, Nazlymov Fencing.

  • Fencing runs in the family — her father, Vitali Nazlymov, is an NCAA champion, and her grandfather, Vladimir Nazlymov, is a three-time Olympic champion.

Fave D.C. spots: In high school, she and her friends would shop in Georgetown, and frequent SeoulSpice in Tenleytown for lunch.

  • Also a fave: boba — specifically Kung Fu Tea's lychee black tea.
