Members phkrause
Tesla calls EV shots The embrace by GM and Ford of Tesla's charging standard for future electric vehicles is a clear win for consumers, making charging easier and more accessible. But it's also a win for Tesla, the EV industry's 800-pound gorilla, which seems to have scored a landmark victory in its effort to make its charging standard the dominant one, Joann Muller writes for Axios What's Next. Why it matters: The EV pioneer faces increasingly stiff competition from traditional automakers. But Tesla is dictating the terms — and reaping the lion's share of the benefits — of America's historic shift to electric vehicles. GM announced yesterday that, starting early next year, its EV owners will be able to use Tesla's network of 12,000 Superchargers (with the help of an adapter). Starting in 2025, GM will adopt Tesla's connector design — essentially tossing the Sony/Betamax dispute to Tesla, as Ford did when it made a similar announcement two weeks ago. 🕶️ What we're watching: GM and Ford's moves could trigger a chain of falling dominoes — with other carmakers embracing Tesla's technology, essentially digging a grave for the engineering standard agreed to by most automakers in 2012. 🖼️ The big picture: The shift to electric vehicles, which currently account for around 7% of new car sales, is picking up steam, fueled largely by government incentives for EV buyers and manufacturers. No company is better positioned than Tesla to exploit these EV-friendly policies. You'll need them to determine whether your home can support the charger. You can buy a unit for $300 to $800, but the cost of hooking it up is the big unknown. The average installation runs between $526 and $1,315, HomeAdvisor says. Picking the right charger can be confusing because there are so many choices — 32 amps all the way up to 80 amps. Why it matters: The UAW — representing more than 400,000 workers — has long been a powerful force in progressive politics and a Midwestern bulwark for Democrats, Axios' Nathan Bomey, Joann Muller and Joe Guillen write. What's happening: President Biden has touted his aggressive push for electric cars as part of a major reinvestment in American manufacturing, but many auto workers aren't on board. The union is withholding an endorsement for Biden's 2024 campaign after backing him in 2020. 🖼️ The big picture: Most UAW members are still building gas-powered vehicles. The union worries EV factories won't employ as many people as traditional plants because EVs are simpler to build. The intrigue: Trump descended on Michigan — the heart of the UAW — last week, saying EVs would lead to a "decimation" of Michigan's auto industry. 👀 What we're watching: The heightened political rhetoric comes as the UAW prepares to enter difficult labor negotiations with Detroit automakers next month. But there's a big problem: not enough buyers, Axios' Joann Muller reports. Why it matters: The growing mismatch between EV supply and demand shows that although more consumers are interested in EVs, they're still wary about purchasing one because of price and charging concerns. 🧮 By the numbers: EV sales, which account for 6.5% of the U.S. auto market so far this year, are expected to pass 1 million units for the first time in 2023, Cox Automotive forecasts. Tesla's rapid expansion, plus new EVs from other brands, are fueling the interest — 33 new models are arriving this year, and 50+ new or updated models are coming in 2024, Cox estimates. Reality check: Sales aren't keeping up with that increased output. The nationwide supply of EVs in stock has swelled nearly 350% this year, to 92,000+ units. That's a 92-day supply. Dealers have 54 days' worth of gas-powered vehicles. Between the lines: Hybrid vehicles have much lower inventory levels, supporting Toyota's argument that consumers want a stepping stone to fully electric cars. There's a tight 44-day supply of hybrids industrywide, according to Cox. Why it matters: People buy more than twice as many used cars as new ones. So a vibrant secondary market is key to broader EV adoption. 📈 By the numbers: Dealers sold an estimated 41,000 used EVs in the second quarter of this year — a 36% jump from a year ago, per Cox Automotive. (Cox Automotive's parent company, Cox Enterprises, owns Axios.) 🔮 What we're watching: Will an electric car's battery last through multiple owners? Like your phone, EV batteries degrade over time — generally 2%-3% a year, according to Scott Case, CEO of Recurrent, which tracks battery performance data supplied by a nationwide fleet of EV drivers. The rate of degradation depends on how the car is charged and driven, and the kind of weather it lives through. There aren't enough older EVs yet for a full analysis. Members phkrause
🚗 EV roadblock Illustration: Sarah Grillo/Axios Early adopters fueled the initial spike in electric vehicle sales, but the next wave of consumers — the more price-sensitive "early majority" — is proving to be more elusive, Axios' Joann Muller writes. Mainstream shoppers aren't willing to pay a huge premium over conventional gas-powered vehicles, in part because they're still apprehensive about charging an electric car and they think better EVs are coming. 💡 Why it matters: The EV transition will likely be longer and bumpier than many experts predicted — which explains why some automakers are hedging their bets, cutting prices and recalibrating their strategies. 💼 Case in point: During Ford Motor's second quarter earnings call, CEO James Farley backed off earlier sales targets for fully electric models, and said Ford will quadruple its hybrid offerings. Ford is delaying its goal of scaling production to 600,000 EVs annually, from the end of this year to 2024, Farley said. 👀 The intrigue: Farley is echoing the argument Toyota has been making for years. Why it matters: Even if you bypassed the EV offerings for a traditional car, you might get to the rental counter and find out all they have left are EVs. Rental companies have beefed up their EV fleets and are offering them at substantial discounts. If you opted for Hertz's cheaper "mystery" rental, don't be surprised if it turns out to be an EV. 🧠 Be smart: If you're not prepared, your trip could turn into an unexpectedly stressful experience. Here's what you need to know: Get familiar with the car before leaving the rental lot. Ask questions: Rental agents don't often provide much instruction. Know your rental's driving range and consider the potential impact of weather. Explore charging options ahead of time. Some hotels have chargers —call ahead to verify. Put the major charging network apps on your phone and set up billing ahead of time. Keep reading.
