Solar panels on water canals seem like a no-brainer. So why aren’t they widespread?

Back in 2015, California’s dry earth was crunching under a fourth year of drought. Then-Governor Jerry Brown ordered an unprecedented 25% reduction in home water use. Farmers, who use the most water, volunteered too to avoid deeper, mandatory cuts.

Could California’s solar canal project be an answer for climate resilience?

In a state beleaguered by drought, high temperatures, and growing wildfire dangers, the idea of placing solar panels over irrigation canals to address both water loss and climate pollution is finally getting traction. Solar AquaGrid creators Jordan Harris and Robin Raj envisioned a game-changing solution that blends solar energy generation with water conservation.

🔋 Crazy ironic stat

Tulsa, Okla. — where the 76-foot-tall Golden Driller has stood guard for 70 years — is now home to an electric-bus plant and huge wind farm, with a solar-panel factory on the way. Photo: Green Country Tourism

About two-thirds of new investment in clean energy — wind, solar, etc. — "is in Republican-controlled states, where policymakers have historically resisted renewables," the N.Y. Times reports.

  • Why it matters: Increasingly, money matters more than politics.

🖼️ The big picture: The U.S. is enjoying an accelerating pivot from fossil fuels — even in areas dominated by the oil and gas industries, the Times writes in "The Clean Energy Future Is Arriving Faster Than You Think."

YOU LOVE TO SEE IT: Victory In The Amazon

Good things are happening! Voters in Ecuador are putting Big Oil in its place (underground), while Maine invests in heat pumps. Plus, a conservative activist known for dark-money influence is under federal scrutiny, a Georgia judge is standing up for transgender kids, and more.

After Maine Surpasses 100,000 Heat Pump Goal Two Years Ahead of Schedule, Governor Mills Sets New, Ambitious Target

To continue Maine’s momentum, Governor Mills also unveiled a new target: installing another 175,000 additional heat pumps in Maine by 2027, thereby bringing the number of heat pumps installed in Maine homes, businesses, and public buildings during her time in office to 275,000. If this target is achieved, Maine would have more than 320,000 heat pumps in total installed across the state.

Rising hubs: Seattle is Fusiontown, USA

Illustration: Sarah Grillo/Axios

Seattle has become a global leader in the race for fusion energy, with five major companies looking to crack the code on the clean, sustainable power source, Christine Clarridge of Axios Seattle reports.

  • Why it matters: In a rapidly warming and carbon-dependent world, there's a "huge prize" for developing and commercializing fusion energy, Mike Sexsmith of General Fusion said last month at Seattle Fusion Week.

Catch up quick: Fusion — in which atoms' nuclei are fused to release energy — promises effectively limitless, zero-emissions power without the radioactive byproducts produced by today's fission-based nuclear plants.

  • But researchers still haven't figured out how to create a sustainable and scalable fusion reaction that generates more energy than it takes to produce in the first place — though new breakthroughs hold promise.

🔮 What's next: A thriving fusion hub in Washington will depend not just on progress from companies, but also on buy-in from environmentalists and policymakers, consultant Chris Ajemian said.

Also in Seattle, the country's biggest ferry system is going electric in what local officials hope is an early step toward decarbonizing the broader maritime industry, Melissa Santos of Axios Seattle reports.

  • Washington State Ferries — the largest U.S. system by ridership, carrying more than 17 million people last year, and about 24 million annually pre-pandemic — is working to shift to a zero-emissions fleet by 2050.

Ahead of Thursday's opening of the U.N. climate summit COP28 in Dubai, UAE, this chart shows that the oil and gas industry's clean energy investments have grown rapidly.

  • But they remain a small slice of the sector's overall spending, Axios Generate co-author Ben Geman reports.

🌐 If you're heading to COP ... so is Axios! Axios House will host events Dec. 4-6, with experts and officials from around the world — and plenty of networking.

✈️ Milestone for cleaner jet fuel

A normal-looking Boeing 787 landed at New York's JFK Airport this afternoon. But it was no ordinary voyage, Axios Generate co-author Ben Geman writes.

  • Why it matters: The Virgin Atlantic trip was the first commercial widebody airliner crossing powered 100% by "sustainable aviation fuels" — mostly used cooking oil.

State of play: It has 70% lower "lifecycle" emissions — including production and other steps through combustion — than regular fuel, according to the airline.

🔎 New hope for power from "white hydrogen"
mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.axios.com%

The discovery in eastern France of a potentially mammoth cache of white hydrogen — one of the cleanest-burning fuels in nature — has added to a trail of clues elsewhere in the world that a holy grail of clean energy may be lying in the ground for the taking, the N.Y. Times reports.

  • Why it matters: Natural hydrogen — called white hydrogen because of its purity — could be a source of clean energy continuously generated by the Earth, The Times explains.

"Hydrogen is magical — when you burn it you release water, so there are no carbon emissions," said Jacques Pironon, a senior researcher and professor at the University of Lorraine, France.

  • "We think we've uncovered one of the largest deposits of natural hydrogen anywhere in the world."

🥊 Reality check: There are doubts about the exact size of the French trove and how to extract the gas.

Decades after Europe, turning blades send first commercial offshore wind power onto US grid

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — Despite some recent financial setbacks, U.S. offshore windpower has hit a milestone. An 800-foot tall turbine is now sending electricity onto the grid from a commercial-scale offshore wind farm on pace to be the country’s first.

💡 Coming American milestone
mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdatawrapper.dwcdn
Data: U.S. Energy Information Administration. Chart: Deena Zaidi/Axios Visuals

An inflection point in U.S. energy looks imminent:

  • Combined power generated by wind and solar is slated to eclipse coal-fired electricity next year, as the sources move in opposite directions, Axios' Ben Geman writes.

Why it matters: The milestone, forecast by the Energy Department's independent statistics arm, helps tell the ongoing story of massive changes to the U.S. power mix.

  • Coal has been on a steady decline thanks to pollution rules and relatively inexpensive and abundant natural gas — now by far the largest power source.

What's happening: The march of renewables is fueled by lower costs, federal subsidies and state energy policies.
