Typhoon Gaemi

A powerful typhoon made landfall in northeastern Taiwan today, leaving major flooding and damage in its wake. Conditions in Taiwan worsened as Typhoon Gaemi brought heavy rainfall, gusty winds and a dangerous storm surge. It reached land in Yilan County with sustained winds up to 125 mph, equal to a Category 3 hurricane in the Atlantic. Continuous heavy rains and rising flood waters across the Philippines have also killed at least 13 people and displaced more than 600,000, local officials said. The typhoon is expected to make landfall in mainland China's Fujian province today, bringing more strong winds and downpours to a country already hit hard by weeks of extreme rain.

Typhoon Ampil

Hundreds of thousands of people are being advised to evacuate in parts of Japan as Typhoon Ampil approaches the capital. The storm, located 121 nautical miles southeast of Yokosuka, Greater Tokyo, has intensified to the equivalent strength of a Category 4 hurricane, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. More than 400,000 people in total were issued evacuation advisories in the cities of Mobara and Asahi near Tokyo and Iwaki, Fukushima prefecture, which are near the east coast and expected to feel the brunt of the storm later today. Thousands have already lost power while airlines and railways are canceling services during the peak summer travel season.

Typhoon Shanshan

Nearly 4 million people in southern Japan have been urged to evacuate as Typhoon Shanshan made landfall today, leaving thousands of residents without power. The storm is lashing Kyushu island with hurricane-force winds, torrential rain and dangerous storm surge. Hundreds of flights have been canceled, bullet train service has been suspended and major companies like  Toyota have closed factories. Rainfall has already reached over 20 inches in many areas and totals could be as high as 40 inches across some isolated and hilly regions. Forecasts show Shanshan is expected to turn to the east and move through Kyushu, weakening to a tropical storm by day's end.

Typhoon Yagi

One of this year's most powerful storms is slamming the Chinese holiday island of Hainan, the strongest typhoon to make landfall there in 10 years. Typhoon Yagi is currently the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane and is threatening significant wind damage — including to trees, buildings and power lines — as well as flooding. The storm is expected to maintain its strength as it makes another landfall in northern Vietnam on Saturday evening, bringing between 10 to 20 inches of rain. China's Central Meteorological Agency renewed its red typhoon warning, the most severe alert, today for Hainan and Guangdong. Hainan is often dubbed "China’s Hawaii," boasting sandy beaches, good surf, five-star resorts and duty-free luxury shopping.

Typhoon Yagi

Typhoon Yagi, Asia's most powerful storm this year, has wreaked havoc across southern China and Southeast Asia since it made landfall last week. More than 200 people have died in Vietnam in the aftermath of the storm and dozens of others are missing as flash floods and landslides take their toll, state media reported Thursday. Yagi has left a trail of destruction following days of intense rainfall and powerful winds over 90 mph. Despite weakening on Sunday, downpours continued and rivers remain dangerously high. The heavy rains also damaged factories in export-focused northern Vietnam's industrial hubs.

Severe weather

Two tropical systems are set to make landfall in Asia today, impacting regions that were recently hit hard by Typhoons Bebinca and Yagi. Tropical Storm Pulasan has weakened significantly from when it peaked as a 75 mph typhoon earlier this week. Winds have decreased to around 50 mph but the storm will still dump heavy rainfall when it makes landfall near Shanghai today. Forecasts show central and southern areas of South Korea could receive isolated rainfall amounts of up to 10 inches. Farther south, Tropical Depression 16 has developed just offshore of Vietnam. It is expected to remain a weak system as it makes landfall in central Vietnam in the coming hours. Areas of central Vietnam, Laos, and eastern Thailand are bracing to potentially receive up to 20 inches of rain in isolated locations.

Tropical Storm Trami

Widespread flooding and landslides set off by a tropical storm in the northeastern Philippines have left at least 24 people dead, swept away cars and trapped villagers. Many schools and offices are closed on the main island of Luzon today to protect millions of people after Tropical Storm Trami slammed into the country's northeastern province of Isabela after midnight. Local officials said thousands have been rescued by government forces but many more are waiting to be saved, including some on roofs. About 20 storms and typhoons batter the Philippines each year. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest recorded tropical cyclones in the world, left more than 7,300 people dead or missing and flattened entire villages.

Tropical Storm Trami

Tropical Storm Trami swept across the northeastern Philippines last week, inundating entire towns with severe flooding and triggering deadly landslides in what was the deadliest and most destructive storm to hit the archipelago so far this year. Nearly 130 people have been killed and at least 30 are missing, the country's disaster relief agency said. Authorities are now racing to deliver relief to remote communities, particularly those in the hardest hit Bicol region, ahead of another powerful storm that could soon lash the region again. The death toll around the country continues to rise as blocked roads, choppy waters and strong winds make it risky to reach rural areas by land, sea and air.

France rushes aid to Mayotte after Cyclone Chido leaves hundreds feared dead

Cyclone Chido

Reports of widespread damage are emerging from the French territory of Mayotte after a 100-year cyclone ripped through the region Saturday. Hundreds and possibly even thousands are feared dead in the wake of Cyclone Chido, a Category 4 storm with winds above 135 miles per hour. "The situation is catastrophic, apocalyptic," Bruno Garcia, owner of Hotel Caribou in Mamoudzou, Mayotte's capital, told CNN affiliate BFMTV. Chido flattened neighborhoods, knocked out electrical grids, crushed hospitals and schools and damaged the airport's control tower. Located about 5,000 miles from Paris in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa, Mayotte is the poorest place in the European Union and has struggled with unemployment, violence and a deepening migration crisis.

Tropical cyclone

A severe storm slammed the northern coast of the French Indian Ocean island of Réunion, packing wind gusts of over 100 miles per hour. Tropical cyclone Garance — the equivalent of a Category 2 Atlantic hurricane — is the strongest storm to hit the French territory, located about 400 miles off the coast of Madagascar, since 1989. It is bringing heavy rainfall, powerful waves and strong winds. In the coming hours, winds could gust over 124 miles per hour and rainfall totals could exceed 7 inches. Conditions are expected to remain dangerous throughout the day, but will begin to improve Saturday.
