Why it matters: That's a switch for both former President Trump and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has long complained about the party's "unacceptable" and even "bizarre" nominees in prime races. Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), the new NRSC chair, has vowed to avoid repeating that mistake. So he's trying to thread the needle of recruiting conservative candidates who are acceptable to Trump — but not so far right they scare GOP moderates. Daines is shaping the field by offering early endorsements and urging other potential candidates to stay out. 🔎 Behind the scenes: In picking candidates, Daines has rejected some Trump loyalists but has been careful to shun never-Trumpers. Rising Republicans crave Trump's endorsement — no one else has his sway with the base. And barring a major change in the presidential field, he'll be at the top of the ticket. Daines and the committee's executive director, Jason Thielman, are in close contact with Trump campaign manager Susie Wiles and Brian Jack, a senior Trump campaign aide. Case in point: In Montana, Daines' home state, the NRSC likes former Navy Seal Tim Sheehy over Rep. Matt Rosendale to take on incumbent Sen. Jon Tester (D). The NRSC has called Rosendale — one of the far-righters in the House who voted to oust then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy — "a plant from the Democrats" because of that vote. In Nevada, the NRSC prefers retired Army Capt. Sam Brown over 2020 election denier Jim Marchant, who was part of Nevada's alternate slate of pro-Trump electors. In Michigan, the NRSC recruited former House Intelligence Committee chair Mike Rogers over the more-MAGA James Craig (who has one bankruptcy and multiple divorces) and former Rep. Peter Meijer, who supported Trump's 2021 impeachment. In Pennsylvania, the NRSC backed hedge fund executive David McCormick while slamming MAGA firebrand Doug Mastriano, Trump's unsuccessful pick for governor last year. Mastriano considered a run for Senate but bowed out. The intrigue: The risk is that some ever-MAGA voters will be offended by the party's heavy-handedness. The NRSC tactics have ticked off at least one close Trump ally: Steve Bannon, who called Daines a "gutless coward." 🥊 Reality check: In Arizona, the NRSC hasn't weighed in on Senate contenders. But privately it favors conspiracy theorist and election denier Kari Lake, a Trump loyalist who lost the governor's race last year. Lake is among three Senate GOP candidates Trump has endorsed. He's also publicly backed Jim Justice, who's running to replace retiring Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Rep. Jim Banks in Indiana, another red state. Why it matters: Even Republicans acknowledge that Democrat Tom Suozzi's embrace of stricter border policy — and his attacks on Republicans for rejecting the Senate's bipartisan border bill — contributed to his eight-point victory. "He sounded like a Republican talking about the border," House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said at a press conference today, in which he urged the GOP not to "panic" about its chances of losing the House in November. Suozzi "basically ran away from what has been the Democratic agenda for the last two years," said Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-N.Y.). Zoom in: President Biden has vowed to remind voters "every day between now and November" that former President Trump and his GOP allies blew up the bipartisan border deal. Democrats believe Suozzi's victory provided an early vindication of that message. What they're saying: "The GOP has presented Democrats with a unique, unprecedented opening to go on the offensive on border security," Sen. Between the lines: Many other factors may have contributed to Suozzi's victory — including the "scandal penalty" the GOP likely paid for expelled Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), whom Suozzi will replace. What to watch: Former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway suggested there's a lesson for Republicans too in Suozzi's willingness to own an issue that otherwise has been a vulnerability for his party.
